Tragically, Rodney’s Wallstreet just died. This sad fact is interesting to me because I was/am thinking about getting a used G3 Powerbook somewhere. Why? Well, I’m planning on starting college next year and think a laptop would be great. I’m using a Pentium with Win 95 I borrowed from work and I like to portability. So why don’t I buy a new model? Because:
[list=1]
[*]I’m going to be a 40 year old man starting school, I need a computer that doesn’t look like a Chiclet a 14 year old would carry (new iBook.)
[*]I’m going to be a 40 year old man starting school, I need a computer that doesn’t look like a purse (old iBook, no insult intended, I loved them when they first came out.)
[*]I’m going to be a 40 year old man starting school, I need a computer that I can afford along with school costs (TiBook.)
[/list:o]

A used Powerbook sounds to me like a good idea (expansion isn’t an issue for me, all I’ll be doing is a lot of word-processing.) Any recommendations on which one, where to get it, upper limit on how much I should spend, reason not to do it, etc?

A used PowerBook is an extremely good choice, especially for the application you mentioned.  You’ll still have speed for those kinds of apps but ease of use from the Mac.  If you need to do wintel things you can add PC functionality easily.
and, RAM is really cheap right now.
The PowerBook FireWire is a good one to go for.  They came in 400MHz and 500MHz speeds.

I’m with DrMemory. Get the Pismo (PowerBook FireWire). It’s a good machine. My problems were/are known issues. Shame on Apple for not doing anything about it. Yes, I will be writing a lengthy rant about my deceased Wallstreet.

Hopefully you’ll give it a first-class funeral. And you can finally justify the purchase of a brand new iBook icon_wink.gif

Speaking of those iBooks….WOW!  I just saw one in person at the internet conference my department holds annually.  I just love that thing, but I think I love the TiBook more.  Call it a power thing…

Thanks everyone for the input. I think I’ll have to start saving up for one now. Where would you suggest I look for one? eBay?

I personally think I would try to swallow my “manly pride” and buy the new iBook.  It doesn’t look that bad, and you can’t beat its functionality for the price.  If I had the spare money I would buy one and I am a 24 year old guy.

If not, you can probably find a Pismo on eBay, but they aren’t cheap.

I know, I know, pride goeth before the fall. But I like the way the Pismo looks and am not so crazy for the iBook, even the new one.

There is a Pismo featured on eBay right now with an Airport card and station, OS X, Office 98 and some good games with a “Buy it Now” price of $2,000. Its a lot but you get a lot. Wish I had it on hand. Alas, some day my Pismo will come. <Sigh>
