Let’s have a bit of a reality check

Yeah - Michael Dell’s an idiot - considering relative share value, but let’s not forget that Dell still reports over $55 billion in revenue against Apple’s $19 billion.

Dell still moves a lot of ugly, poorly designed and poorly manufactured boxes.
...as the Japanese admiral says in Tora,Tora,Tora! “I’m afraid all we have done is awaken a giant sleeping bear”

He may have said that in a book, or something, but in the film, Tora, Tora, Tora, it is just “a sleeping giant.”

Thanks I changed it from bear to giant many times in trying to recollect it properly.

The company has lost the global lead in PC sales, is working to abandon its direct to consumer model and has lost relative pricing control.

Yes. The company sells a lot of product. But the lack of investment in IP will leave the company in a deteriorating position versus its rivals.
I believe Michael Dell came up with this on the spur of the moment, and probably regretted it almost immediately.

Regretted it? Why? So he hates Apple and thinks Apple are a joke? A lot of people do. Even Guy Kawasaki does. BFD. Your problem is you assume everyone has this inflated perverse adulation of all things Apple. Where in reality most people see Apple as just another company that sells computers and gadgets with no fanatical overtones. Probably because they all have a life.

Seeing as you obviously do have a life, why don’t you take it and your iHate elsewhere, unless you’ve something constructive to say smile

Beacause it was a no-win remark, even if Apple went out of business within months, and even MD is bright enough to realise that. He could not possibly claim that any Dell product was remotely as significant as the Apple II, the Lisa, the Mac, or the Newton, despite their failings. So Apple at least deserved a dignified death; anyone can see that.
So he hates Apple and thinks Apple are a joke? A lot of people do. Even Guy Kawasaki does. BFD. Please give evidence that either of those people hate Apple, and evidence of my problem. I must say I was unaware of this problem you say I have. I would like to be balanced in my assumptions.

ATM it seems to me your post was simply a little too hasty.

There is a whole Wikipedia web page devoted to just that quote.  The page starts with this paragraph:

Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto is portrayed in the 1970 film Tora! Tora! Tora!, as saying after his attack on Pearl Harbor, “I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve.”  The supposed quote was abbreviated in the film Pearl Harbor (2001), where it merely read, “I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant.”

You can read the whole thing here.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isoroku_Yamamoto‘s_sleeping_giant_quote

(I can’t get those last few words to be part of the hot link, so you may have to copy & paste.)
Regretted it?

Probably.

Why?

Because, if Dell has a reasonably normal human psyche, he doesn’t like being wrong. He probably especially dislikes being spectacularly wrong. And he probably really loathes being spectacularly, embarrassingly wrong in a public forum.

Is that so hard to understand, Fairly?

So he hates Apple…

Hmm…if he ever did, he apparently doesn’t anymore. I understand he even wanted to sell computers running on Mac OS X.

and thinks Apple are a joke?

I doubt it. Only the mentally challenged would think such a thing and Dell, at least, is not mentally challenged.
