Question for iPhone Owners

Quick question for those of you lucky enough to have iPhones ... is it possible to use the phone effectively with one hand?  If so, is it cumbersome?

It would appear to me to be geared toward two hand use.  Is one hand operation for most features possible and if so, convenient in real-world scenarios?  I think this would be an issue for me as well as some others.

Thanks.

For quick calls I can use one hand easily.

For stock quotes and weather I can do it but it is a little tricky.

I have used mine while driving (I know…I know…not the smartest thing to do, but at least I’m honest about it…and I was driving SLOWLY and had one hand on the steering wheel and one eye on the road).  I generally use two hands, but would say one handed use *is* possible in a limited way.

I think it is easier than most phones to drop accidentally while using it with one hand, especially if the hand is very dry. Seems more like a slippery bar of soap than most phones. It might be worse for someone with small hands. But it definitely can be used with one hand. (I am left handed btw)

Yup, I’ve dropped mine on the street more than once while trying to use it one handed.  But, I do use it one handed for web surfing and scrolling.  I don’t think I hit links one handed, however.

It took time to get used to holding versus Black Berry just because it’s a different shape.  Now it fits perfect and one handed works fine.  Question when you dropped it - how far did it drop and did you notice damage.  I have had a few close calls and wondered how durable it is.  Personally as much as i love iPhone if each time it dropped the screen was broken I may be reluctant to keep spending that kind of money.

I’ve dropped mine at *least* twice onto the concrete from about 3’ up…wasn’t happy about it, but no damage, other than a small “sidewalk burn” ding on one corner of the silver case.

Thanks for the feedback.

FYI, when the iPhone was first released, I saw a video online where a guy tried to scratch the glass with various objects (like car keys) and then he dropped it 3 times on a concrete sidewalk.

No breakage!  Only minor scuffs and scratches.  Appears to be quite durable.

I thought the screen would get screwed up internally but apparently not.  Thanks

Dropped two or three times from about 3’ onto concrete or asphalt.

Last time I somewhat broke the fall with my foot, but the phone ended up glass-side down and slide about a foot on asphalt.

Scratched the chrome edge at one corner.  Glass was without mark and no effect to screen or any other functionality.  Kept on ticking.

Hmmm, interesting to note. That’s my biggest fear - dropping the damn thing. I refuse to put it in a case of any kind (it’s just so sexy without any clothes).

I suppose that I’ve used it a few times with one hand but it’s much more natural 2 handed. I’m sure that if you only used it one-handed due to some physical limitations you probably wouldn’t even think about it. Not easy though if you don’t have med. to large hands IMO. Like trying to do the “magic swipe” to delete emails is much more difficult with one hand.

I dont like the fact that the keypad will not flip when doing email. I am sure this will be corected in a later version (update). Have not dropped on concrete though.

I agree about the landscape keyboard.  Why this wasn’t offer initially for text messaging and email and only for Safari use is beyond me.  Makes no sense.  It would seem to be so much easier to use that way.  I’m sure it will be offered for all use soon with a quick and easy firmware update.

I just have a few questions about missing features in the iPhone.

Will it be likely that the iPhone will get “voice dialing” or is that something the iPhone can’t do because it’s lacking some electronics in it’s present configuration?  Is this something that’s very important to have with a handset that doesn’t have a physical keypad.  I’d be surprised that the iPhone couldn’t have voice recognition in general with OSX being as sophisticated as it is.  It might be nice to have an application such as iListen Mobile.  Maybe the processor would be too underpowered for that sort of thing.

Is iChat likely to be on the iPhone considering AT&T can’t make money from iChat messaging?

Is video recording a no-no because there isn’t an application to do it or is it because the camera doesn’t support it?

The iPhone can and will do everything you describe above eventually, I am 100% certain of it. There are no technical constraints.

BTW, AT&T don’t make any money from YouTUBE but they still allow it on the phone. iChat is a no-brainer, and will likely arrive in the next update to the phone (which will be a major revision IMO), due once Leopard is released for the Mac. I’ve been saying this since May smile
