[quote author=“carbonat”]A very recent post states (oddly in Spanish) that the hard drive must be called Macintosh HD for the upgrade to succeed. It has not received any reply so far though.

El disco duro tiene que llamarse “Macintosh HD” es algo que ha resuelto el gran gurÑŠ gaiteiro el primer dнa de la instalaciуn.

Not true in my experience. I installed Leopard on most of our Macs this past weekend, one of which is my daughter’s iMac G4 with a hard drive called ‘10’ (so labelled when running Disk Warrior prior to Tiger installation awhile back - don’t ask). Leopard installed without a hitch and she was back to watching Sailor Moon on her iMac a couple of hours later. All the other family members’ accounts were fine, and all the apps worked.

[quote author=“tommyelay”]I’ve done 4 installs (2 on Intel Imacs), 1 on a G4 iBook and one on a G4 eMac.  Did the default install on all 4 - no problems whatsoever. All 4 are doing fine and everyone is quite happy.  The mosaic screen saver is awesome !!

Welcome,

I am curious to know how it is running on the eMac speedwise.  We own one and I am thinking about putting Leopard on it.

I am going to try to talk the University Bookstore in giving me a copy of Leopard before I get my iMac (hopefully on Wed)

Make sure you have the max RAM (1 GB on mine) It’s my son’s computer and he hasn’t complained about any slowness.

Just found a great use for Time Machine. I had Leopard already installed on my current iMac 20” Core Duo. Today I bought a new 24” iMac 2.8GHz.

Rather than put my current iMac into Target Disc Mode so I could transfer it all to my new iMac, losing a day’s worth of usage in the process, I simply plugged in my external Time Machine hard drive into the new iMac, and from the Welcome Screen told it I wanted to restore from a Time Machine backup.

Its doing it now, all 240GB of it. In the meantime I can continue to use my now-old 20” iMac in the meantime with no downtime cool

Once the new iMac has finished, I can swap them over in seconds.

No, that’s not true.  I upgraded my G4 DP 1 Ghz MDD to Leopard, and the HD I upgraded was named “Number Two”. (It was my test bed copy - I had 2 120 gig HDDs, both with Tiger installed and identical by using Migration Assistant to copy data over.)

Upgrade went fine, except that Leopard doesn’t like third party Blue Tooth dongles - it won’t recognize it after waking from sleep.

Upgraded my MacBook this morning using Erase and install - the Bluetooth issue is gone, altho whether it was the type of upgrade I used, or the fact that the MacBook has BT built in, I won’t know until I upgrade Number One using erase and install tonite.

But the name of your HDD should NOT make any difference.

So many guys have problems with Leopard????

Upgraded 3 Macs (20” iMac 2.4 GHz, 15” MacBook Pro 2.33 GHz, 17” PowerBook G4 1.67 GHz), no problem.  Didn’t bother to backup nor do any disk checks.

Only non-Apple applications on Macs are Office 2004 oops and video games (Command & Conquer series, Age of Empires, Diablo, StarCraft, ...), turbotax, HP photosmart, Power eTrade Pro razz, ToS roll eyes and FireFox.  After years of using computers, I’ve learned to resist installing applications other than those come out-of-the-box.  If I can help it, I won’t instal any.

Since I’m a light user, the only visible improvements I feel is faster and sharper display lol.

[quote author=“Derrick”]Leopard is now up and running for me ... although things are not quite perfect

<snip>

So I now have a very basic system ... with no iTunes .... I am not a happy camper frown

Are you running any extra hardware? Add in video or sound cards? Less than common hardware plugged into the USB or Firewire ports?

I’m grasping at straws but I’m thinking hardware driver issue.

All the issues being had by many AFB members in doing the Leopard upgrade doesn’t give me a warm, fuzzy feeling about it.  Color me suprised at all the difficulty.

I would have to say that I too was surprised… As a techie and very very long time Apple user this has to be the most difficult upgrade for me that I have ever done. But I was using older equipment so I will give the benefit to AAPL on that one. But what is troubling is that what I had to do to restore my machine would NOT be easy to the “average” user. I think that AAPL may have rushed this version out without enough quality assurance done with all possible configurations. I personally as a stockholder would have rather had them come out 2 weeks later with a bit more QA done. Don’t know if today’s mediocre stock action is a result of the known problems with Leopard or just WS’s stupidity.

If I had to be Machiavellian, I would say the upgrade problem was deliberate. 90% of upgrade problems seem to relate to APE being installed. Apple HATES APE - an unbelievably high proportion of tech support calls relate to problems caused by APE, and Apple often refuse to offer support once they know you have APE installed unless you remove it.

Leopard has been in testing for 18 months. Apple will know all too well that APE is causing install problems. One way of ensuring people uninstall APE and never touch it again? Make it the root cause of system instability upon an upgrade to Leopard.

Hasta la vista Unsanity… may your APE haxie rot merrily in hell.

[quote author=“rattyuk”]Also - and I’m being very picky here - what are Apple thinking about with the folder designs - they look like some tacky third party hack.

I really like the new folder designs. You probably can’t recognize which folders are which - based on their debossed icons - as quickly as the old folder icons since they’re monochromatic, but they look sharp. Especially when you get a really detailed look at them in coverflow mode.

Perhaps… I too believe that Apple does this sort of thing, take Flash support on the iPhone. Not there and I think Apple is trying to crush Flash as a standard. But if Apple is going to do this sort of thing in their OS a little forewarning would have been nice…. real nice.

More on why Apple wants to crush Flash

[quote author=“Constable Odo”]However, in large corporations, the IT guys are gonna hate the idea that a lot of their jobs are going to be on the line if the Macs don’t require their services as much.

You’d better believe that’s the case. Everywhere that I’ve worked that has tech support, they’ve always had a built-in bias towards Macs. When an employer has a bank of 35-40 PC’s that are contracted out for regular maintenance, as opposed to the 5-6 Macs in the art department whose relatively minor problems are fixed by the people using them, it’s pretty easy math to figure out why IT guys would be afraid of losing their jobs.

[quote author=“gatesofhell”]I have a new MBP and Leopard is fantastic.  However my 1.8 GHz imac G5 (pre-isight), is a different story.  Leopard installed OK but the noise from the fans would wake the dead.  This can’t be right.  I have looked around and fan noise is a real issue for a number of people.  I am going to do a re-install (archive and install this time) and see if that makes a difference.  At the moment I wish I had left my old imac alone!

Check versiontracker.com for this free fan control utility. Also download Temperature Monitor , which will give you a precise idea if the fans are really responding to overheating, or simply because their prefs are screwed up.
