I’m not involved in them nor working at the company producing them, nor do I know anybody at the company. All I know is they are doing a series of 5-10 spots for the same product, involving many (a dozen or so) computer generated characters, being worked on right now. A friend interviewed for the position and had to sign tons of NDAs. He declined to take the job. On his way out, the owner of the company was paranoid that he saw anything on the artists’ computer screens. If my friend knows anything else, he’s not sharing it with me.
Thought that would get you guys excited wondering what it could be for.
It’s gotta be video rentals and Apple TV? (Pixar characters?)
Edit: So this is the DVD’s last christmas at Walmart. I think they made a big mistake not letting Apple do it before Christmas; Apple’s marketing campaign would actually have boosted DVD sales as well as boosting the download-ready market size ready for next year, because it’s the movie people buy, not the format. By launching after Christmas, Apple won’t be helping DVD sales. Smart Apple; silly Walmart.
SB, thanks for the heads-up! A new Apple ad-campaign; oh goody! If they’re only just starting it now it must mean a few months to any launch though, which would take us to around MacWorld….

Either macworld or mid december/christmas, but we know apple doesn’t usually introduce products that close to macworld, despite xmas shopping. Keep in mind it could be something mundane like a new macbook or ipod campaign. But…... I would assume those don’t require such secrecy these days.

I would tend to agree - that would be about the right timing. Working on the ads now, getting ready for a MacWorld (Jan) launch.
‘bout damn time IMO - get the deals done and give me an excuse to get an aTV so I can get movies anytime I want (I hate the video rental stores).
Watch for blue light specials on the AppleTV during Apple’s Black Friday sale. Although there are still rumors of “Unity,” the upgraded ATV with DVD/BlueRay drive. But by Xmas?
5 to 10 spots!!! it must be a major rollout. Or they are going to blitz the product on TV. It is pretty soon to start producing ads for a Jan 15 introduction. Might just see something sooner. Talk about a great gift for Xmas to go with the new HD TV. The holiday shopping season starts Friday. SB how long ago was your friend asked to audition for the commercials?

I just did some research. The company has only done recent iPod campaigns. So, this could just be for iPod xmas commercials. You’ve been warned.

Sorry to burst your bubble guys, but this is somewhat my field… If they’re shooting the spots now, and especially if they’re full on into the graphics work already, these are probably meant to air in the next couple weeks, three max, i.e. nowhere near MacWorld…
...Which of course still doesn’t preclude them from being ads for something we’re hoping for!

MacGuffin
Coo even better… 3 weeks - in time for peak Xmas shopping
The AppleTV has never had a TV ad, has it? Perhaps a major update to it would be the stimulus for moving Job’s “Hobby” into the mainstream and the living room.

It had a little-known ad where you moved from room to room in the house while it played a clip from school of rock.

It ran briefly. It was a new concept for an Apple ad.

Since then, I got the feeling SJ has been keeping his “hobby” close to his chest..slowly testing the waters. I wonder how far he plans to take aTV.
