Great find and very exciting. Jobs said the iPhone was 5 years ahead of the competition—I can only imagine how far ahead Apple is with regard to user interfaces for other non-traditional uses. Apple has been the undisputed UI leader ever since the introduction of the mouse, but a quantum leap is about to occur and the likely outcome will be the widespread acceptance of Apple in some completely new and previously untapped markets.

Nice catch.

And now if we couple this with a voice recognition interface…........

this touch manipulation may well be the control method of computers of the future.

We always listened how voice recognition will change thing (like star trek), but i think that voice recognition has a very limited use.

why ? ... imagine an open space working place where tens of people are trying to tell something to their computers. it would be like all the people simultaneously making phone calls in one room. very distracting. it might come in handy for text input, but imagine you are two people in the office both dictating to your computer. predictive input is better for this. also a couple of other reasons but i see my post is getting long.

multi touch may be the solution ..

Wow indeed!  This is where Apple’s biggest competitive advantage can generate a true Apple/AAPL breakout.  No other computer manufacturer can even dream about doing this since they don’t do the software side.  They have to wait for Microsoft to create a new “platform” and then figure out how to implement it.

Because Apple designs both the hardware and software, all decisions relating to this new interface will be made with the hardware top of mind, optimized not only for performance, but also for profitability.

Its too bad, though, that Steve keeps his design teams so lean, so its hard to imagine a touch computer being released in 2008.  They’ve been too occupied with the iPhone, Leopard etc.  So, look for some real excitement at Macworld 2009.

The iPhone runs OS X. Apple’s already built a multi-touch computer smile Now all it has to do it work out how to best utilise this new interface for the PC rather than a handset. The technology is all there though, including all the APIs and frameworks necessary.

Apple’s done all the hard work already, and is at least 2-3 years ahead of anyone else in this respect, possibly more smile

There are still many guys who are used to steering wheel smile.  Pointer system (mouse) is unlikely to disappear because multi-touch means screen is too near.  Keyboard would always be there ... virtual and customizable just not physical.

I do agree that it’s an emerging technology that will be widely adopted.
BUT there are still many applications where tactile feedback is desired.
It will be a long time before virtual controllers completely take over, if ever.

Was speaking with friends in Tokmyo last week… they know someone high up at Apple in Japan, who indicated that AAPL would come out with some “spectacular new products” in 2008… and that they should “hold onto the stock.”

Of course, we here at AFB alrady know this… but the tone reminds me of when I last heard something that “direct” from someone at Apple Japan… and that was a couple of months before the first iBook was unveiled.

Multi-touch for large screens (especially laptops) when combined with the advances in solid-state hard drive technology (see other threads on AFB) could lead to unbelievably wonderful “must-have” machines… and very soon.

For designers, architects and others who manipulate 2D and 3D objects, hand-control is far more intuitive than using a mouse or even a stylus.
