I’m giving you the start of this new topic since you will at the Glendale Apple Store quite early tomorrow (Black Friday) helping family members select their new iPhones.
[quote author=“granny smith”]The online doors are open now.
A lot of stuff about 10% off.
Telling perhaps that the high end stuff isn’t marked down.
I suspect the Touch, The iphone, and the Mac Book Pro, are selling so well, no discount is needed to move them.
I didn’t expect a discount on the iPhone but I was hoping for one. I have to buy one this week for a family member and would have bought it later today if a one-day discount was offered.
One advantage of living in the Pacific time zone and being a night owl is that the Apple Store holiday sale is now up.
iMacs and MacBooks are $101 off, except the cheapest models. Lots of other discounts. I am eligible for a “veteran’s” discount through the Military Officers Association of America—it’s essentially the same as the federal employee discount. The sale discount applies to my discounted price, as well. (Damn! I could have saved $101 by waiting instead of buying my new iMac October 26. However, I wanted an iMac with Tiger, not Leopard. I bought it at a local dealer—not an Apple Store, but they matched the discount when I showed it to them on the Apple Store.) No discount on MacBook Pro or Mac Pro.
$11 off on iPod Nanos & Shuffles, up to $31 off iPod Classic. No discount on the iPod touch nor the iPhone, of course, but the Apple Bluetooth headset is $21 off, as is the Airport Extreme Base Station.
AppleTV is not on sale. I’m not sure if that’s good news or not, but I’d prefer to see it as good news for future plans from Jobs’ “hobby.”
I wanted an iPod Touch, but there too no sale pricce. The nanos are on sale and they are currently the best sellers, so I don’t think the criteria of selling too well to be marked down applies.

A sale on the Nano tells me that Apple wants to make sure as many people as possible buy an iPod this quarter. They want to meet that Tommo figure of 30 million
No discount on Apple TV and the iPhone tells me that two things. One is that AppleTV is a hobby for now and putting it in as many hands is not a priority for Apple. We appear to be far away from any deals with the studios
The iPhone is being sold as quickly as Apple can make it. No need to cause further shortages for the Christmas season. It is a status symbol and those who want will have to cough up the money.
Sponge, I agree with you, except WRT to the AppleTV. I think it sells far better than some imagine, yet the margins on it are actually quite tight relative to other Apple products. Discounting it makes no sense and would impact gross margins unreasonably.
In any event the current model is more than adequately equipped for anything required of it - HD streaming TV, whatever - it doesn’t need an upgrade, except perhaps to include bluetooth internally.
The aTV was way ahead of its time and remains the most underpriced and overpowered set-top box on the planet for what it is capable of. We will see that potential realised sooner rather than later, I believe.
My partner and I went to the Fifth Avenue store in New York City this morning. The place is PACKED! I’ve been there many times when it’s been busy, but this was incredible! They set up registers at BOTH sides of the store, and had wandering clerks. Everybody was buying! As we left, there was a line of people WAITING to go in—they’d reached capacity and had to wait for some people to leave!
I took a lot of iPhone shots and set up a Flickr folder, if anyone’s interested. Go here:
BTW, the goal today for Apple isn’t to sales price its Apple-branded merchandise. It’s to build store traffic. For the most part the sale items will be 3rd party products in which Apple has much more room on margin. The “sale” is just a way to provide people with an “excuse” to visit the Apple retail stores on an otherwise crazy shopping day.

I visited my local Apple store this morning and purchased iProducts. With the market closed I’m trying to figure out what to do with myself this afternoon.
