theflyonthewall.com: Apple may open iPhone stores in China-Pacific Epoch
According to a rumor from Beijing Business Today, Apple Inc. (AAPL) is planning to open its own iPhone stores in China. An insider from Apple China said that the iPhones will be released in Asia in 2008
Reading between the lines #1: Whether one carrier gets an exclusive or not, Apple wants to control the sales experience in China instead of being forced to trust some Chinese carrier or partner to manage it.
Reading between the lines #2: If no carrier will agree to revenue sharing (as hinted previously), then no carrier will get an exclusive shot at the iPhone on their network alone. In other words, carriers will have to compete with one another to offer the best-priced and most appealing plans and service contracts—something that is destined to make iPhone carrier contracts / usage fees dramatically lower in China. Meanwhile, Apple keeps 100% of hardware sales revenues and controls the entire sales experience.
Absolutely, stunningly brilliant and totally appropriate for China—and possibly elsewhere eventually.
If I was a RIMM executive, I’d have already soiled my shorts at the prospect of Apple-operated iPhone stores. RIMM has absolutely *zero* retail experience and will be utterly incapable of competing with this model.
I’m so excited by this prospect that I very briefly entertained the thought of applying to be a retail associate at an Apple iPhone store in China.
Any chance of this happening in time for the Olympics? And/or with a new 3G model?
Holy sh*t.
EARTH-SHATTERING NEWS IF TRUE.
