Nokia vs Apple : clash?

STOCKHOLM -(Dow Jones)- Nokia Corp. (NOK) could experience delays or holdups in its smartphone strategy if rival Apple Inc. (AAPL) goes on the defensive to protect its intellectual property rights regarding the touch-screen iPhone.

“I think Apple will likely view Nokia as infringing on its user interface patents,” said London-based Nomura analyst Richard Windsor Wednesday. “But I donÒ‘t see this being the same scale of (the) legal battle Nokia has with Qualcomm Inc.(QCOM),” Windsor said. He said Nokia is likely working on an overhaul of its s60 platform, to be ready in the second half of 2008, a move that will feature touch.

He said Apple claims to have filed at least 200 patents relating to the touch screen user interface on the iPhone and is likely to protect them. He said Apple and Nokia would be more likely to end up in an agreement in 2009 rather than slugging it out in the courts.

FSJ has a post up saying Bertrand Serlet is leaving Apple. Is this FakeNews of RealNews? roll eyes

It isn’t written like FakeNews… did I miss an announcement or something? Or did FSJ actually get a real scoop here?

Hope this news does not make a dent and hope it is resolved quickly:

According to a report from UK data-recovery firm Retrodata, revision 7.0.1 Seagate (STX) drives manufactured in China have defective read/write heads. While Apple (AAPL) said it has only received “a few reports” of the problem, Retrodata believes it is serious enough to warrant a recall of some MacBooks.

We would continue to buy Apple shares heading into MacWorld and its earnings announcement in mid-January as Apple’s three major product cycles – Mac, iPod, and iPhone – fuel upside. Apple will have multiple winners once again this holiday season, with Macs a particular standout.

T, what do you see the margins being on the Macs vs. the iPod mix with the higher ASP Touches taking a lion’s share of sales? If Macs really are the big seller this Qtr., would that mean higher margins or no?

It wont. Recalls are @ cost of seagate, not apple.

I think this has been known for a little while so while it’s disturbing, I’m guessing it’s not the end of the world. Funny, how GS just recommended buying Seagate, guess they’re not too worried about it!

Mac margins have improved yet again thanks in part to the slump in hard drive and DRAM prices. LCD screen prices haven’t fallen as dramatically as in the past.
iPod margins have risen dramatically thanks in part to plunging NAND pricing and also the high volume Apple now achieves in all its product lines helping achieve better component pricing generally. That’s why I think a gross margin of 36% is possible this quarter. Lets not also forget the big impact of Leopard on margins too, and also the beginning of rising subscriber revenues from AT&T starting to flood in.

Jolt my memory.  What happen to the NAND deal with Intel?

No idea what the current state of play is, other than that Apple pre-paid $500M guarantee supply through 2009 (or was it 2010?)

AFAIK the deal provides for a price which is guaranteed to be the lowest to Apple compared to the broader NAND market rather than being for a fixed price or offering any actual pricing security for Intel/Micron, to whom the chief benefit derived from this deal was the pre-payment and the ultra-long-term supply deal.
