“Cupertino, California-based Apple has sold over 1.4 million iPhones so far and hopes to sell 10 million in 2008, helped by its launch in Europe, then in Asia next year. In Germany, 10,000 sold on Nov. 9 alone.”
Once again, a twist on what SJ said. 10M by the end of 2008, not in 2008. No matter, they will blow past that number before the end of 2008.
HAB
IMHO, this statement is repeatedly misquoted and misunderstood, and more than likely was intentionally crafted in such an ambiguous way by Jobs so as to cause this exact effect.
The actual target that Jobs cited in the keynote was for the iPhone to achieve “1% market share in 2008,” which he then went on to define as 10 million units. The only problem being, this 10M figure was derived from total units worldwide in 2006. Obviously, at the end of 2008, there will be substantially more units. But shrewd Steve isn’t going to mention that because he is giving himself an out on the low side, stating two figures that are incongruent with each other so that he is “right” if he is anywhere near either one.
Also note that the predicate of the statement (1% market share) implies that the correct understanding of the resulting sales calculation would certainly be BY the end of ‘08, not IN ‘08.
But HAB is right, any units goals one could derive from any interpretation of Jobs’ statement were no doubt selected with an eye towards UPOD. So even if 1% worldwide penetration at the end of ‘08 would mean Apple selling 15M units, I am sure that Jobs et al expect to handily beat that number.
