[quote author=“Tommo_UK”]The Times reports that these tracks….:

will be protected by digital rights management (DRM) software, and will not be playable on any other device.

*yawn* .. great.. just what consumers want: useless content they can only play on a single handset.

Who do they expect to be interested in this $hit?!  :o Seriously, I’m amazed anyone could even think such a scheme will be remotely popular with anyone. Staggering!

Actually, “desperate” is more accurate.

Any reporter ask the question yet - “What happens after one year?” You sure heck won’t be taking the music with you if you can d/l unlimited music. It’s just a hidden subscription service.

I’ll pass.

Re: Nokia to Offer Unlimited, Free Music with Universal

[quote author=“Tommo_UK”]So now the music industry is determined to totally strip the perceived value of its product to zero. Free music, forever, or at least apparently so, if you buy a Nokia “Comes with Music” phone. Or rather all the music you have on your phone after the first year stays on your phone forever, but then you have to start paying a subscription fee for new music?

Or what?

More news at some point, some time.

roll eyes

1. buy nokia thingie
2. download the whole site!
3. buy ipod clasic (or 5 to hold all music)
4. move music to ipods
5. sell nokia thingie.

Ofcoz I dunno in what format the music will be.

note: *oh* it has some kind of drm…

Its WMA DRM apparently, and will only play on the one device.

When you get your no development, no marketing, commodity pedaling ass kicked up between your shoulder blades it puts pressure on the brain and you do things like Uninoki. How can SJ keep a straight face in public when asked about this ?

Yeah, I know just piling on but it feels really good after a day like today.

And the Nokia music store is a doozey:
http://musicstore.nokia.com/

went there and got this message that makes me really want to use that site…

“Nokia Music does not currently support the Apple Safari (Mac OS X) browser on your operating system

Supported systems are currently Microsoft Windows XP or Vista

Supported browsers on the above systems are currently Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and above”

ASSh*les…

Its a terrible, terrible site. Looks dreadful. No structure. Totally confusing. If you have the debug menu in Safari enabled, just select “MSIE 6.0” as the “user agent” and then you can load it just fine.

Its worth checking out just in order to see how backward and behind they are.

More news on this increasingly dreadful looking offering:

Ars Technica is reporting further details on Nokia/Universal’s supposedly “free” all-you-can-eat one year music subscription service, and if you thought this plan seemed too sweet to be dreamed up by a bunch of music biz suits, you thought right.

Not only are the Nokia tracks DRM’ed to prevent you from using other devices or even burning CDs, the DRM scheme in question is our sad old friend PlaysForSure.

On top of that, the only way to renew your subscription for more free music after a year is to buy a new device.

And for all of you who voted in the poll, it looks like Universal is billing Nokia around 5 bucks a month per device sold for the sub, which Nokia is I’m sure more than happy to pass on to you.
