[quote author=“mike_b”]I really hope it’s all we hope it will be, but lets bear in mind that all they’re announcing is a meeting to discuss plans for the future, it’s possible that the sdk will be coming a little bit further down the road than we think… I hope it’s not. We’ll know on the 6th.

PLease read the comments and understand the bigger picture Mike. It doesn’t matter when it comes out. What matters is who is developing what with Apple. The release date is irrelevant (relatively).

There has been considerable buzzing about the status of the iPhone SDK in the blogosphere lately; the company had originally said it would ship in February, and it is obviously a tad behind schedule.

I’ve been saying this is going to merit an event. This will be huge and include software partners and a major set of announcements.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there were several major enhancements to the iPhone available either on or shortly after the SDK event.  Some of my friends have been waiting impatiently for “voice dialing”—wouldn’t something like this be possible using the SDK?

What other iPhone features might we look forward to in early March?

Tim Cooke on the SDK launch next week about the iPod touch and the iPhone:

This will add a whole new dimension to the potential of the iPod touch, limited only by developers’ imagination.

The SDK is here. Its real. And it is literally going to change the world of software development.

OS X on iPhone/iPod touch/Mac is now the world’s largest most diverse development platform (outside of Windows for PCs). Best of all. You will be able to write once in XCode and deploy on any OS X device, with GUI-related allowances of course.

NO OTHER PLATFORM OR GROUP OF PLATFORMS CAN OFFER THAT.

This is a world-changing development. Believe me, this is one of the biggest things to ever happen in Apple’s history and absolutely unprecedented in the technology world.

But we already knew this a year ago when we first heard the iPhone ran OSX.

Yeah, WE knew it, but NOBODY ELSE understood it, and they STILL don’t. That’s what gives us the insight to invest in this company, and hold through the massive dips and dives, because we know this company is going to $450.

Will there be a secondary mouse button ? That, ladies & gentlemen, would be the ultimate thing to write home about ! A complete secondary mouse button kit - SMB SDK from Apple Inc!

What do you mean? No mouse ? What ?

Don’t fret the details - Apple is building the pyramids here. A few months either way are immaterial.

The really exciting thing is not just a new platform, but that this is a step in building the infrastructure for the economy of the future. Apple is the one leading us forward through iTunes and the iTunes store. What will we do for a living in the future, and how will we get paid for it? We don’t know, just as a 1930’s farm worker couldn’t imagine how office work, that produces nothing, could create the wealth of a growing middle class in the 20th century.

The precise structure Apple imposes on the economic activities surrounding iPhone applications is going to be really interesting to see.

Jailbroken iPhones already have a voice dialing app.  Also have a voice recorder for making verbal notes or recording meetings, or when acting as an FBI informant.

I think dictation (speaking e-mails which are typed by software) would be a very hot item. It already exists on other phones. Also useful for writing, making notes, etc.

Reminds me of what brad bird from pixar said about SJ.. went something like, “SJ would be in our meetings and someone would suggest a song for the movie. They would say, ‘This song is going to be huge this year’, and Steve would say, ‘I don’t care about whats huge this year or next..I want to know what will be huge 50 years from now’.”

A couple points to ponder:

1. iPhone/iTunes combination is a very big part of this. Apple will be the gatekeeper and enabler for the expansion of the iPhone capabilities through easy application downloads. The Nok’s, Mot’s and Rim’s of the world do not have a similar enabler. In their case the carriers are the gatekeepers. Aside from monetizing ring tones and lame java games, the carriers have totally screwed up that opportunity. Apple had the foresight to sidestep that obstacle. Having the subscriber activate through iTunes was pure genius.

2. If the introduction and integration of the iPhone into the enterprise goes smoothly we can expect the halo to expand to include the enterprise. If the IT departments start to use Mac’s to develop enterprise iPhone apps then I think you will see the addressable market for the Mac to expand as well.

As Tommo said…this will be huge and way beyonfd our comprehention. Tommo…was this event delayed or not? I can’t separate facts from fud lately wink
I think this is only the beginning of something revolutionary…the iPhone and iPod are a “test” i think…. there is a link between the fact that there are so little countries that “have the iPhone” and this event….i think the gates are now wide open and this new flood will come: all in good time but it will come, mark my saying. All the other telco’s will s..h..i..t their pants when this monster takes of. There will be a total synergy between ipods, iphones, macbook air, Apple TV and OS X…. communcation, remote controlling, mac-controlling, browsing, media viewing, interacting….as the event announcement said: limited by your imagination!  cheers.

Added: gee I re-read my post…i did a lot of thinking there…must be this half bottle of medium sherry   big grin

Here is an interesting take on the potential limitations of the Enterprise features.  The guy seems pretty clued up to me, on the technical angles.  I am a little less convinced at his suggestion of a RIMM partnership - we’ll know next week.

Should we declare SG (sleepygeek) the new SJ of this forum when it comes to the technology vision???  I vote yes…

I think we need some kind of RIM partnership to get properly into the enterprise market.
