I couldn’t believe what I saw on the SteveNote broadcast. 99 bucks for a revamped edition of iTools? No way! This is worse than .NET, for cryin’ out loud! Is Steve really gone totally out of his mind this time?
Remember, when iTools was launched Apple told us it was gonna be free for life. Yeah, right.
Sorry folks, it’s back to Yahoo! or whatever FREE service you might prefer. In the meantime, sign [url=http://www.petitiononline.com/iTol/petition.html]

Did they fix the spelling and grammar on that petition at all? I’m not signing it the way it is. It’s embarassing. :D

I hate bad spelling too. I wish they’d asked me 8). Even I can see it’s bad and English is not even my native langauge. The spelling isn’t the only thing that’s bad. But hey, I’m joining the liguistically challenged this time

I just can’t do it. Not just yet. Better calm down over the next few days. Don’t get me wrong, I love writing angry letters. It’s actually one of my hobbies.

I did it. I coughed up $50 for the full “.Mac” experience. I just hope it doesn’t turn out to be a whole lot oe eXtra Pain…
Oh well, at least I got Virex for MacOS X, a decent-sized mailbox and a reasonably large iDisk now. Nowhere near $100 worth of value, if you ask me, but then I didn’t pay $100…
I just hope Steve adds some nice things to the “only 9 bucks a month” .Mac tools soon, or he’s going to have a lot of trouble getting new users to pay for it.

Well, as our European Chairman you should be the first one on the continent :D
Just wondering… how can I even get .Mac without a credit card? I don’t have one and I don’t want one. Apart from my rage and anger, I always want to testdrive things at an early stage…

funny
“but then I didn’t pay $100… “
You will next year… if it still exists. Why are people supporting this crap? I can’t wait for the lawsuits forthcoming.

Yeah! I’m rolling in the Euro bills ever since TMO made me “?bermeister of Total World Dominance, Abendland Division”
MWUHAHAHA!Seriously, the thing better last more than a year or two, or some people (me included) will be seriously miffed.
Jonathan, you’re out of luck. For the moment, .Mac can only be had if you pay through credit card.

This is a very nasty move by Apple. Okay, offer some services at a price, but please, Apple, don’t rip off your current customers. I have persuaded others to buy Macs by showing them iTools—they’re not going to be pleased either with Apple, or with me!
Not that I’m pleased with Apple! I don’t mind paying for services, but I object to having to pay for services I do not want. The mac.com email address was a great idea—hidden advertising—and I used that particular email address when complaining to companies about their lack of support for Mac users.
Sorry, Apple, for just about the first time (well, apart from your lack of support for HyperCard and QTVR Authoring Studio), I am extremely annoyed with you.

Quit bellyaching. Apple isn’t a charity operation. They are a business with a board of directors, shareholders, and profit targets like everyone else. I hear Steve Jobs even puts on his pants one leg at a time like all of us…

99 bucks for Apple web services? Good deal IMHO. It’s slick, it works well, and it’s revenue for Apple. Can’t blame them for not wanting to leave money on the table.

It’s also poorly written, makes potentially unreasonable demands (I think a small fee for email-only is more reasonable than free) and has inaccuracies (hotmail now costs $19.95 per year, I think).
I’m all for signing a petition regarding .mac, but not this one.

But even more it depends on the way that you see -

Leave original free, enhnaced gets a price
I guess I don’t understand why Apple would do this when they need all the god news they can get. This will drop membership down to below 1 million would be my guess. It would’ve been acceptible if they left the existing service as is and made an enhanced service at a cost like Hotmail did. I don’t use it that much and will not even consider paying $99 for it.

Actually, just FYI, I’ve gotten some feedback from a couple people who signed up saying Virex isn’t what it’s cracked up to be. I’ve used Virex 5.x and 6.x on OS 9 and earlier, and it’s always been the best, I thought. Sounds like the new 7.1 version for OS X is not up to snuff. It can’t auto-download updates, takes too long to scan, etc. from the reports I’ve gotten.
Backup is a very simple backup program, can backup to iDisk. But someone reported today that only Apple internal CD-RW drives work with the CD-RW backup. It can’t back up to HDs. It can do scheduling, though.
Note you *can* download Backup with your trial account (though it doesn’t work fully). You can’t download Virex unless you pay up.

The offsite backup w/ease is enough for me, paid.
They’ve got the mega-database engine going on… there’s a lot of features Apple _could_ provide that would not cost them very much but would be substantial value-added for us.
I’d like: buy more bandwidth, host my domain name, act as an second official DNS for mydomain, ... lots of the features that webhosters provide… Apple is already large enough to have economies of scale for bandwidth/robotic backups/fire protection/uninteruptible power/etc.
Other thoughts?

2 cents coming…
I never used iTools, but I understand why Apple is asking so much for it now. Apple believes they have a unique market segment (which they do), and can capitalize on it. Premium prices are not unusual in the Apple world. “Why ask for $50 when you can ask for $99.00?” is the theory. Is this service going to be worth “$9.00 a month.” Nope. Apple should be ashamed of itself.
I don’t doubt that the iTools service was costly, and needed to be changed, but let’s be reasonable. Apple should be asking for between $30 and $50 for this service, and probably offer optional items for those who don’t need or want the whole ball of yarn. Again, like the Jaguar full price only issue, Apple needs to be more flexible and reasonable.

What’s the deal? So, i guess what apple is supposed to do is develop the itools apps, provide the storage space and bandwith for 2 millions plus users, and suck up the cost and pass it on the shareholders and investors? Sure, Steve, operate itools at a loss, when the technology sector is in a nosedive, the stock market is plummeting and computer sales are down worldwide. Do you have any idea the infrastructure needed to maintain even free email accounts for that many people? :-? Damn! If you have a constructive solution for how apple can provide this and not loose money, lets hear it.

Support 2M users, but how many use it?
This is the thought that immediately crossed my mind. I signed up the first day for iTools, shortly after it was announced, just to see what it was like. Looked at the new .Mac yesterday and found that my account is still active after almost 2 years of non-use by me. That means Apple is reserving disk space, maintaining my account, etc. when I have no interest in using it. How many of the other 2 million users are people who joined but never really followed thru on using the services? It would be interesting to see what the number dropped to if Apple eliminated all the accounts that have been inactive for the past 3-6 months.
