Ok here is a crazy opinion.

I talked to a friend who is close to many Apple reps since he buys thousands of dollars of equipment for his school.  He understand technology very well and knows a number of other people in the industry.

He claims that we might see a delay of the true 3G iPhone until August or later because there is a killer chip coming out.  Apple has the habit of introducing the best chips in their systems.

Anyway, there is the possibility that we will see a delay.

What I can’t figure out is what exactly will Apple introduce at the end of June, if the 3G was delayed.

Any thoughts?

Very doubtful, imho, simply because Apple’s educational sales reps are extremely unlikely to know details about future iPhone development efforts, especially with regard to suppliers and the arrival times of various components. I know several Apple educational sales reps and I grill them for details—they simply don’t know.  Is a “killer chip” coming out? Possibly. Is Apple using it? Possibly. Is it possible that Apple could get it first and exclusively and still launch in late June? Yes, Intel (for example) has agreed to such terms in other cases.

The implications for a delay would be big, but there is just too much smoke starting to rise now such as the AT&T memo, Vodafone, etc. I still think late June.

I think one important point we may have overlooked is that if Apple is now truly willing to let go of revenue sharing as it’s main partnering form for iPhone sales, then that may mean we are much closer to a breakthrough announcement for the Chinese market.

Combine that with the news this morning that Apple will be rolling out in Latin America via America Movil, it looks like come June, SJ really wants to make a huge set of announcements for iPhone 2.0 distribution all across the world all at once.

Next I predict some definite news about rollouts in Japan and/or Korea.

It’s beginning to look like Apple’s confidence at hitting 10m sales in 2008 (and more recently various analysts’ higher figures) is based on unlocking being the key driver.

Agreed, but I’d say there are lots of key drivers including 3G (and GPS?), third-party native apps, dozens of new countries and carriers, etc.

Back to Sponge’s “rumor” concerning a hot new chip. Could your friend have been referring to this possibility detailed in this link ? If so, I can see the 3G iPhone launching in June as expected. The new video capabilities described in the preceding link could come out in 09—which might still be well ahead of the roadmap offered by all other competitors.

Apple has mastered the art of incremental enhancements. Even if rumors of a new chip are real, there’s no reason for Apple to delay a new iPhone’s introduction. There’s too much demand in the market already for the company to allow a loss of momentum by delaying introduction. Too many competitors, too little time to extend market leadership to risk a delay. Remember, there are thousands of developers looking to the iPhone as a meal ticket.

Mobile TV could refer to the TV content available on iTunes, rather than over the air?

.Mac push e-mail coming to iPhone 2.0?

I’m hoping Apple will skip push email and develop a shove service.

Iphone sales

Does anyone on the board have any knowledge of when apple records sales for wholesale units shipped to resellers.  With so many new channels opening world-wide I’m wondering if Apple will book all these shipments as sales or record the sale once it leaves the shelf at the reseller.

Doesn’t Apple sell the phones to the resellers?

That is what I thought too and that they booked the sale when it is shipped to the reseller. That is also probably why you see resellers discounting the iPhone in order to clear inventory for the new G3.
