While unofficial, I’ve read that the majority of the unlocked phones have ended up in Russia. So we might color them red as well, despite history having already done so.

Job listings hint at multi-carrier iPhone in Australia, Brazil

By Aidan Malley
Published: 06:35 PM EST

Following word from individual carriers of wider regional launches, Apple has posted a bevy of new job opportunities that allude to multi-carrier strategies in some—but not all—of the iPhone’s new territories.

Posted shortly after America Movil and Vodafone announced their international deals with Apple to offer the iPhone, the listings for Australia, Brazil and Mexico all make clear whether new hires are meant to support one or more carriers.

In Australia, posts for a Lead Carrier Certification Engineer and a Field Validation Engineer both have any prospective candidates heading up the approval of iPhones with “Cellular Carriers,” according to Apple, potentially making Vodafone’s deal just one among others.

The new vacancies lend support to a rumor circulated late last week of a deal with Optus that also claimed the carrier wouldn’t have exclusive access to the iPhone. This claim also had Optus announcing its strategy in mid-May, or within weeks of both the new multinational announcements and Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference in mid-June.

A similar pattern is emerging with job listings for Brazil. Apple job entries for Carrier Certification Engineers in lead and general roles, as well as a third for a Field Test Engineer, also indicate that any of the future employees will be asked to help approve the touchscreen handsets for more than one provider.

The South American country has so far only been given iPhone support from America Movil’s local division, Claro, but could potentially be served by carriers such as Brasil Telecom, Oi, Vivo, or Telecom Italia’s Brazilian operation, TIM Celular. TIM is already poised to offer the iPhone in its native Italy, but hasn’t announced any foreign agreements.

Enthusiasts in Mexico may have relatively limited choices, however. A solitary position for a Carrier Certification Engineer in Mexico City only makes mention of a single wireless carrier rather than the plural mentioned elsewhere. This would leave only America Movil’s Telcel as the iPhone’s supplier in the Latin country. Past rumors haven’t suggested multi-carrier deals for the iPhone in the area.

Separately, the Australian listings also make mention of a need for experience with CDMA phone networks as well as GSM, EDGE, and UMTS, but is not believed to relate to the launch of a phone supporting the technology in the country: Telstra, the lone carrier continuing to support CDMA for the island state, shut down the service in late April in favor of its GSM and UMTS networks.

O2, Carphone: More 2.5G iPhones inbound

UK residents worried that they may no longer be able to get a 2.5G iPhone are safe, reports say. Although Carphone Warehouse sold out last week, and the O2 website presently states that neither the 8GB or 16GB iPhones are available, representatives from both retailers say that more stocks are inbound or already present for some of their sales venues. O2 notes that more 16GB iPhones have been ordered for web sales, while its high street retail stores should still have some in stock.

Carphone says it has also managed to obtain 16GB phones for its retail shops, but that the situation for online stocks is currently being analyzed.

Apple, as usual, has attempted to maintain consistent numbers of both 8 and 16GB devices, but 8GB models may have otherwise disappeared from UK shelves. O2 and Carphone say they are reviewing online and offline stocks, but a price cut is set to expire on June 1st, only days before many analysts believe Apple will announce a 3G iPhone. As such, it is expected that neither of the UK’s third-party iPhone retailers will order more 8GB phones, which would have to be priced at a severe discount to be cleared from inventory.

[quote author=“eniac”][quote author=“dwn4crwn”]WOW…I know everyone has been talking about China being big, but India has to be big news and move the stock…not sure if these are official numbers but the numbers are pretty big…according to this website, over 44 million subscribers to Vodafone and over 260 million users

But how many of them can afford an iPhone? That is not a big number i guess.

India has a population of about a billion. The Indian middle class rivals the entire US population in size. Despite what the average westerner might think, all Indians do not spend their working day walking behind a water buffalo. It’s a changing world out there.

I’m now tossing up, now that I have my iPhone, whether to get another one when the 3G is officially announced.

As for buying it directly from Vodafone, I’m still not too sure. I’m connecting to Voda without a hitch, but I like the idea that I’m not completely tied to it.

And it may not just be Vodafone - Telecom NZ   wants to get in on the act .

But there’s one thing that’s puzzling me. I’m a Vodafone customer right now, as are all the other iPhone users in Aotearoa. I’m only using Wifi via Cafenet , because I haven’t got around to paying for Vodafone’s rip-off broadband pricing plan. But as I understand it Apple is taking a cut from its service providers (40%?) - is this through the registration thing when the phone is first purchased? is that how Voda knows how to pass some of its ill-gotten gains on to Apple?

What is confusing me is this quote from the link “Mr Burley said revenue sharing was unlikely to be a serious obstacle for Vodafone as iPhone users were heavy users and big spenders on data”

Isn’t the common deal on iPhones unlimited data plans for a fixed price? even not having ‘fair usage’ limits for web and email use?

waiting to buy my iPhone when they are officially suported here with good data plans
