I have a new iMac… (I just love typing that)...  within it’s confines there is a new superdrive. I have read that there are varying qualities of dvd/cd media available… and that you cannot always go by the manufacturers name, since a lot of them out source.
I have also read that even though my dvd burner may be capable of burning at a certain rate… I need to buy compatible dvd media in order to achieve that burn rate.

Any suggestions or past experiences would be appreciated. I am assuming quality is of the essence here and since I had problems with the dvd player in my old Power G3 (God bless the little bugger… she looks so lonely)... I want to do all I can to avoid similar problems with my new superdrive which is located… (you guessed it) in my new iMac.

Thanks
Rob

I’ve been using media from various makers at a range of price points and had no issues. My policy is to buy a trusted brand name - TDK, LG, Apple, Verbatim et al - when they’re on special.

The caveat is to watch out for el cheapo disks that are too thin. There is anecdotal evidence that the insert/eject mechanism in trayless drives (as used in the iMacs) can struggle with thin discs and wear out faster. Maybe this issue should be seconded by another forum member or you can safely ignore it.

I always use Verbatim and have been very satisfied.

I know someone else who had too many problems with Verbatim and doesn’t use them.

I think different drive like different brands better, so the answer may be different for everyone. Try one brand and see what happens.

My only advice is that once you find one you like, stick with it. Computers like nothing more than consistancy.
