Hello,

I am a mac diehard.  I just ordered my fourth mac and my fifth Apple computer.  I chose the G4 867 mhz because it is a good price and decent speed.  I am putting my beige g3 233 mhz in retirement with my Apple IIe, Mac IIsi, and 6100 66 mhz machines.

Sound off about your old machines, what you have ordered and why.

I just ordered a new G4/733. The reason? Simple, price. I can get now for C$2500 what before I could get for C$5000. Throw in a cheap Samsung monitor (753df 17” dynaflat w/ .20 dot pitch) for C$259 (!) and an extra 512 MB RAM and I’ve got a fantastic machine for less than C$3000.

Compare this to my last Mac purchase, a Powerbook 1400c/133, purchased in August of ‘97 for C$5000 for use during my first degree (Physics). Now that I’m on my second degree (Computer Science) I need a new computer. Since my campus is heavily UNIX slanted (mostly Sun boxes) OS X is a natural fit. The G4/733 simply makes sense from every possible angle, price, performance, OS, compatibility - it’s just all there.

G4/DP800 stripped down too $2700 and a 24” sony GDM-FW900 from dell for $1450.
Because I can upgrade the ram,HD,Video, and CD ,but I can’t upgrade the CPU. The monitor, becuase I program and do alot of lightwave, and dell had 20% off moniters with no shipping cost, so I thought hey why not stick it to the boneheads, hehe (monitor cost $2000-$1850 with shipping anywhere else), they lost alot of margin on that sale:)

Hey CW, We just upgraded to a G3 B & W 350. We just couldn’t handle the preforma 600 CD preformance on the web. But I still like the computer. I’m hunting cards and stuff for our G3. Do you have any suggestions? Did you have a SCSI chain on your G3 ? Where did you get them ? Did you make any mistakes along the way with your G3 that you could share with me ? Thanks.

I just ordered the 867 to replace the older 733 I am handing down to one of our designers. While I considered the Dual 800 I decided the price on the 867 more than outweighed the small amount of performance my daily apps that the dual would have given me.
