Apple developing "iPhone"?

Not just your garden variety rumor, either.  This is a piece in the NY Times.  They’re connecting the dots and suggesting that Apple may well offer a phone/organizer device of some sort.  I’m getting a deja-vu as if we may have had an iPhone discussion before, but I dunno.  Maybe just a glitch in the Matrix. :D

It’s not really impossible: iCal, Address Book, bluetooth…

I’m sure there have been iPhone dreams before. :D

CO, here is a message I posted in iPhone on 12 Dec 2001.

[quote author=“Ibanez when he was ‘Guest’”]Actually, forget my previous post, if there is one product I’d like to see it’s iMessage and the Apple iPhone !

iMessage is a much ridiculed suggestion I posted once, on Mac Voicemail software, which gives you the functionality to add voice menu’s, fax back services, e-mailing of voicemail to e-mail addresses (ie. Work) in MP3 format, etc.

I’d like to see this extended to include mini-phone exchange software. Through the phone line connected into your inbuilt modem, you could present callers with a menu, or let them dial an extension. In your house, you would have Apple iPhones, that are airport equipped, with perhaps an LCD screen.

So instead of having multiple extensions and phone lines, all your iPhones could talk to your Mac via voice over IP. You’re phone would indicate when you had a Voicemail (via iMessage), or a waiting e-mail. Your phone would ring when calls came in specifically for you, or you could set up a rotary or hunt-group from your Mac, specify what order the phones would ring, at what time of day !

    Just a thought

    Tony Duff

Not really anything to do with mobiles, and Sony however smile

However there was a discussion, albiet brief, on iPhone previously.

    Regards,
    Ibanez

The only part of this puzzle that seems to be missing is the network. America’s cell phone network is pretty fragmented ight now, and nearly impossible to keep your phone when switching providers. Other areas of the world, like Japan and Europe might actually be easier markets for an iPhone.

Bluetooth and Jaguar made me want to buy a cell phone. If Apple can bring out a cellular phone with PDA capabilities, I say screw the Apple-branded PDA, gimme an iPhone any day. =)

Tis true about the networks, although this is improving.  When the conversions under way are done, there will really only be two digital systems in the US:  GSM/GPRS (largest carriers:  VoiceStream/T-Mobile, Cingular, AT&T) and CDMA2000 1X (largest carriers: Verizon, Sprint).

I would certainly be interested in seeing what road Apple would choose for this kind of convergence device.  My current favorite is the unit from Danger, which will soon be available from T-Mobile.  See here http://www.t-mobile.com/products/handhelds/sidekick/default.asp
