Hello,
I just ordered a Lacie 19 inch Electron Blue CRT, but after 1 month of waiting for it to ship, I am having second thoughts. Which would you order: a crt or lcd? and why? What monitor do you own? Are you satisfied?
I know that TMO’s Michael Munger has the same LaCie monitor that you have ordered and loves it. With that said, however, there is no question that I would get an LCD display.
They consume less power, take up less space on the desktop, are brilliant to look at, and MUCH easier on the eyes. Of course all of that comes at a price, and it is my understanding that the color can be a tad bit off on LCD displays. Not a problem for 99% of the users out there, but if you use your machine for graphic design or publishing, the color issue might be a real issue for you.
LCD’s are definitely the way to go, and if money isn’t a concern, you’d probably do well be ordering one.
The Apple 17” display is beautiful. Of course it has that ridiculous ADC one plug connector, so you are somewhat screwed if you don’t have a newer Mac. Sure you can buy an adapter, but that just adds to the cost of an already more pricey display.
I got a 17” Sony and a 15” Apple display. Both CRT. My next one will probably be a CRT again. The cost less, and that’s for me an important thing. I can get a 19” CRT for less than a 15” LCD (Apple). So my choice is made purely on money. If I could choose tho, I’d go for the 17” Apple LCD too. It’s jst a cool monitor.
Well, thanks for the advice. I just bought a 17 inch lcd. I had to make a deal with my wife not to buy any more bullets (I collect antique ammunition), but I think it will go good with my new 867 mhz quicksilver I am waiting to receive.
I was leaning toward the quicksilver and the lcd all along. I am into graphic design, but only as a amature, so I think it will go nicely. I just could not see spending 589 for the lacie when I could get the 17 inch apple lcd for $410 more.
Although, I hunger for the 22 inch lcd, I would have to go through a divorce and make a deal with the devil to get it.
CW, just to let you know, since you’re in Germany you’ll probably end up paying MwSt. over the item (VAT). Unless you’re an American in the armed services in germany of course.
I am a service member, but thanks for the suggestion. You are right about the pond comment on the prior topic. I have notice a significant delay getting apple products in Germany/Europe. Where are the good Apple computer stores in Europe?
A good one with several stores in germany is Gravis They offer quite a bit, but keep in mind that they offer mostly German software and that the keyboards have a GERMAN layout, the one with the umlaut, etc. Not an English one. So I dunno where you ordered your G4 but it could come with a german AZERTY keyboard. I’d ask your dealer about it. Other options are getting software and hardware dirctly from the States with a credit card, or try if England is cheaper. In The Netherlands most software is available as both English and Dutch versions, atleast on major programs. Games are usually in English. But your best try may be England or the States. Keep in mind that transport costs will be high.
If I could afford it, I would have two 22” Cinema Displays. From there, I would go to one 22” and one 17” Studio Display. From there two 17” Studio Displays.
From there, I would go with a mixture of anyone else’s high quality 17” or larger LCDs.
This is all assuming I am buying new monitors (currently CRT based). If I just couldn’t afford to get the flat-panels I wanted, I would go with 19” or 21” CRTs.
I have a 15” Studio Display flat panel and a 17” ViewSonic. I can’t remember the last time I used the ViewSonic. As soon as the Cinema Display goes below $2000, that’ll be on my desk…
My 17 Studio Display (LCD) from apple arrived about one week ago. After setting it up, I was floored by how my bigger and brighter the screen was than my 17” CRT. You won’t be disappointed with your purchase. Not one iota.
I have seen the 15” apple lcd go for as low as $500. would it be better to just get a 15” or a 15” apple and a 17” samsung ($700+ with TV tuner and picture within a picture)? I think samsung makes the monitors for apple also.
Well I went with the LCD’s for all our machines here in the office, we have 6 15” Apple Studio Displays, 2 17” ASD and 1 Cinema in my office The Apple displays are worth every additional penny compared to the other LCD’s we tested. YMMY
I work in tech support and stare at my screen 6-8 hours a day, maybe more if I’m in the mood to surf or game in the evening. I’ve been using a PowerBook G3 for the last year and three-quarters. Previous to that I used various Macs and PC’s with various CRT’s.
The other day, I sat down at a CRT and was shocked. My eyes couldn’t take it! In only a few minutes I was fed up with the fuzzy throbbing image I was looking at. I exaggerate, but this is how it appeared to me when compared to the crisp, soothing desktop displayed by my PowerBook’s LCD.
One thing to consider when comparing the price of CRTs to LCDs is that the quoted size of a CRT is not the same as the viewable size. A 15 inch LCD is about the same size as a 17 inch CRT, a 17 inch LCD about the size of a 19 inch CRT, etc etc ... CRTs are still cheaper but not as much as it might initially seem.
While I’m growing to like LCDs, the technology I was hoping would be available by now is FED (field emitting diode) otherwise known as cold cathode. More contrast and brighter than LCDs while using slightly less power (due to the energy used for backlighting which isn’t necessary with FED). Sigh ...
I use a Sony G400 - better in my estimation than the LaCie, but probably not up to the overall package offered by the 17"Studio display. Unfortunately, it’s double the cost of the G400, and that means it’s competing head on with the Sony F500R. Now THAT’S a monitor…
