A lot goes into my recommendations and I have already considered all of the issues discussed here.  I stand by my recommendation to buy in the $80’s and $90s.

Could you let us know your selling price target or conditions where you would sell?  Would you be scaling out or out in one-go?

I have a price target of $230 where I see Apple going in the future.  Yet, I will be let people know when I think it’s time to sell and why.  I just know that for the medium to long term invester, buying in the $80s and $90s is a good entry.  And I always scale in and out of positions.

Given the volatility and roller coaster of prices, it may have many opportunities to scale into AAPL in the 80s and 90s (possibly even in the 70s) before it approaches 200 again. Selling during the peaks and buying back during the dips is a popular strategy around here for accumulation.

That’s what I’ve been doing.  I trade on the volatility, hoping to make a little profit here and there, but should I get ‘stuck’ with the shares for a while (ie the price fails to recover to a profitable level), I feel relatively safe with AAPL because it’s such a qualite company, and I have high confidence that we will see 150+ (if not 200+) eventually

Whereas I should never have invested in Citi, a company which I never had tremendous faith in.  ‘Buy and hold’ hasn’t worked out with C at all.

Of course if we’re going to spend most of 2009 down or essentially flat, I’d rather my cash weren’t tied up in equities until the real rally begins.  But I haven’t got the secret decoder ring for identifying the real rally.

It’s now two weeks since my recommendation and the market continues to offer investors a massive buying opportunity.  Personally, I hope it lasts for another month.

Are we really going to rally that quickly?  2009 isn’t even here…  There’s a lot of excitement on the intraday topic that perhaps tomorrow will see a critical movement upwards…

Personally, I was hoping we’d retest 79 to provide a solid buying opportunity.  Even with my faith in Apple, it would be tough for me to buy massively into AAPL shares in the mid to upper 90s after witnessing the November lows.  The psychological adjustment required might be too much…  frown

I still feel the holiday season will be better than expected, but early 2009 will see stagnant consumption (if not worse).  I particularly took note of Meredith Whitney’s warnings about credit card retrenchment.  With income flat (at best) and wealth and leverage reduced, how will consumers buy next year?  A friend of mine just had his card reduced from $10,000 to $2000 without warning…

Again, I do not believe this will be the Second Coming of the Great Depression, nor do I believe hyperinflation is around the bend (2012? maybe…).  I fully expect AAPL to recover to $150+.  But is this the end of our sub-$100 buying opportunities?  If it is, I need to start buying tout de suite!

Personally, I don’t. At this point, I want the market to offer the investor a chance to kick themselves for not buying aapl yesterday. As someone who has lost money in their IRA, aapl is cheap enough for me now. I would rather not spend another month at this level.  roll eyes

Expect that I have a large amount of money coming into the market in early January.  smile

FYI, Apple has now rallied 25% from its lows.  I still think that everyone who passed up buying Apple in the low 80’s is going to be kicking themselves in the ass.

Here’s what I wrote on page one of this thread:

“I feel so strongly about my recommendation that I’ve decided to sell my house to invest in the market.”

Escrow closed on Friday.  I have a massive wire coming in today in time for earnings.  Notice that my recommendation that Apple was a ridiculous buy in the $70’s held strong in spite of fears that Apple would dip into the $60’s or $50’s.  The only thing I’m pissed about is that escrow closed 2 days too late.  I would have loved to get a large position in Apple in the mid-$80s.

So, you’ll be buying before earnings and holding through earnings?

Very high likelihood of that.  Yes.  I have to do my final estimates and see what type of a difference there will be between Wall Street and reality.

So, you think there’s a possibility that Apple will guide higher than the Street’s expectations?
