Would A Return To Boston Be Good For MACWORLD?

I agree:  New York is a center for Graphics design, movie production, advertising.  Plus there are more people in the area !

Rooms in Boston aren’t that much cheaper.  And you get more bang for your buck in NY because, although Boston is a great town, New York rocks !

You can walk around for years and be entertained for free just by people-watching.  It never ends.  You can eat great meals really cheaply if you stay away from the traps (fantastic pizza, Indian, Chinese and millions of other restaurants of every ethnicity).  Broadway, Times Square, Little Italy, Chinatown, Soho, Greenwich Village, Central Park, Wall Street, the Apple Store,  Coney Island, the Staten Island Ferry (free), the Metropolitan Museum, the Opera, tons of movie theatres with old and new films, and lots of live music —and you can reach almost all of them by walking or for a $1.50 subway fare.

Great bars, too, but Boston has plenty of those !

Well, I’m from the St. Louis area, so all the Macworld Expos are about a thousand miles away from me.  So it doesn’t matter to me where the report are from that I read on the Web.

I’d like to see an Expo in Washington DC.  If Apple were more able to penetrate the U.S. Government, it would grab the attention of IT users.  At least we got Apple stores in Virginia, but where are those in the Maryland suburbs?

NYC

I never attended until they moved to NYC.  I enjoy MW, but will only go if it stays in NYC.

I would _love_ if it returned to Boston. It’s only two hours away from me (I’m currently living in Westfield State College) and it’s more convenient than New York. Also, the Jarvis Center in NY is becoming very expensive - that’s why Adobe and Co. skipped it. Boston’s new center will be equal to the Jarvis center, so no complaints here.

Also, wasn’t one of the first Apple Store opened in Boston? Correct me if I’m wrong on that one.

And yes, if you want to bitch about the roads, take the T. The subway won’t kill you razz

Love Boston Area

Sorry but my #1 issue with NY is there is nothing else to do BUT NYC!  I used to take my whole family with me on the Boston Expo trips. I’d rent a cottage down on Cape Cod and drive up to attend the show a few days. The rest spent on the beach!  Since it came to NY I attend alone and really miss sailing on the Cape.  Don’t get me wrong I LOVE NY but go plenty enough for other reasons.  I look forward to it going back to Boston! big grin

I vote for Boston. It’s a morning’s drive (or train ride) from the New York metropolitan area and is an easy commute from what has often been called “Silicon Valley East”. Besides, the Red Sox might be in town which would make for fun-filled series of events to attend razz

Now that is just giving me fertile ground for comments about Bill Buckner and Ed Armbrister. evil grin

I think pulling the expo out of New York is a terrible idea. NYC is still reeling from 9/11 economically, and it will take years for the city to recover from the lost revenues and other catastrophic expenses.  Losing a large, popular convention is another blow to a city that took it in the chin for the rest of the country.

This isn’t just a business decision anymore, unfortunately. And convenience shouldn’t be the only standard we apply.  I would love for folks to stand up and support New York - not forever, maybe, but for now.

I have attended MacWorld’s in Boston, San Francisco, and NY. San Francisco was great but too far and Boston was great except for the bus trips between the convention centers. After attending MacWorld in NY I vowed I would NEVER attend another MacWorld in NY. I have been to many large cities but NY is the worst with rude people and bad lodging unless you pay an arm and a leg. I am very happy MacWorld is going back to Boston as now I WILL attend MacWorld again in 2004! smile

Big Dig

About the Big Dig schedule: While there’s been a lot of slippage and incredible cost overruns, the project really does look like it’s in the home stretch.  The underground highway is mostly done.  Traffic is supposed to start moving through the new tunnel in one direction sometime around the end of this year, and in the other direction a year after that, well in time for Macworld Boston.  The new Charles River bridge is essentially finished (and very pretty); the new Storrow Drive connector bridge next to it has been operating for a while now.

The next phase of the project will be knocking down the old elevated highway and building the alleged new parkland and surface roads in its place, but while that might cause some more disruption to surface streets, at least the new artery will be in place and running.

They’re building a lot of new transit stuff around the area, too; there’s a new transit line involving big natural-gas articulated buses that is supposed to connect Logan Airport to the South Station area by the end of 2003.  One thing I don’t know is how transit-accessible the new convention center is supposed to be, but I’d guess that public transit will probably be your best bet for getting there in any event.
