Perhaps that explains another vivid rumor, offered by Andy Ihnatko of the Chicago Sun-Times, that trucks stuffed with books have been arriving on the Apple campus and leaving empty. “I have heard the same rumor from very good sources,” says Maja Thomas, senior vice president of digital and audio publishing at Hachette Book Group,

They must be using them for mulch around the plantings….

Since, according to Steve: “..people don’t READ anymore”

You can bet Apple will support data tethering on the tablet so if you have an iPhone it will just work, but ATT will extract their $20 and no subsidy.

Following that line of thinking, Apple offers through its own channels a WiFi only tablet for $499, and Verizon offers a Verizon network version for $299 with a two-year data contract.

You gotta figure that upwards of 90% of AT&T customers who would buy the tablet already own an iPhone, so tethering works fine for them, no reason to buy from Verizon.  At $499, if an Apple tablet is as sexy as I think its gonna be, the Apple loyalists will be forming long lines starting in September.  At $299, Verizon customers, locked out of iPhone coolness for years, will be forming their own long lines.  Again, everyone wins.  Apple wins most.
