Palm T|X, Mac OS/X 10.4.11 and Bluetooth Pairing

    Hi all,

I hope you can help. I’m goin’ outtta my ever lovin’ mind. I HAD my T|X paired up with my PowerBook G4 but, now my Mac will not pair with my T|X and vice versa. I’m not even sure what I did to trigger this. I’m beating myself up for monkeying things up.

Anyway, I’ve tried the Bluetooth Setup Assistant a dozen times and each time it goes well although further in the setup, after the Passkey step finishes, I get the message, “There were no supported services found on your device.”

Also, when I look at my Bluetooth File Exchange device list, I see two items in the list with my same HotSync ID. So, I try to delete both and start from scratch with the Setup Assistant. I don’t know if that’s related to my glitch.

When I run the Bluetooth File Exchange and attempt to browse my device with my HotSync ID name, I get a message saying, “Device does not have necessary services.” The error for the other device in the list with my same Hotsync ID says, “Unable to validate device”

Please help me sort this out. I had this working before and I am very upset at myself that I did something to mess up a perfect setup.

    Your assistance is most appreciated.

Inquire to your wireless carrier which version of Bluetooth the device is using. I just bought an iPhone 3G. It seems that it uses Bluetooth 2. My Mitsubishi Outlander from 2007 has a bluetooth enabled Multimedia Communication system (MMC) and although they connect, it’s not as smoothly our loudly as my previous Samsung phone. It turns out the vehicle is using the older Bluetooth 1.1x version.

It’s just NOT the same. I’m hoping the car can be upgraded the next time I take it in. It has an access port for it. Check with your phone device and see which your laptop supports.

I have paired my TX with a G4 iMac running 10.3.9. However, I wonder WHY you want to do this? Syncing over Bluetooth (which I’ve done) takes FOREVER. It’s MUCH slower and much less reliable than USB syncing. (FWIW, syncing is about all you can do via Bluetooth with the TX.) I did an experiment by doing an identical sync via Bluetooth and USB. (Mainly file transfers, deleting the files between the syncs.) As I recall, the Bluetooth sync took something like 20 minutes, vs less than 2 minutes with USB. Bluetooth was designed for connection to low data-rate devices: keyboards, mice, headsets, and the like, not for file transfers.

You might try syncing the TX via USB, first. That might identify problems with anything on the Hot Sync list, though I wouldn’t think that would affect simply pairing the TX and Mac. In desperation, you might try syncing via USB, doing a hard reset of the TX, then restoring via USB. To do a hard reset, hold down the power button while pushing the recessed Reset button on the back. That will wipe out all data and software you’ve installed, so be sure that you have backups. If you do this and have backed up everything, Hot Sync should restore the data the next time you sync. I always make a copy of the Palm Users folder, in any case.

He wants to pair a Palm TX, which is a PDA, NOT a phone, so there’s no “wireless carrier” involved. The TX uses Bluetooth 1.1, which is REALLY, REALLY slow. (I have a TX.)

Oh Bejeebies!  BT 1.1!  Well, at least it’s BlueTooth.  Next time I get irked at the lag, I’ll try to recall what you’ve said here.

Well, to answer your prior question of what am I thinking to want to go through a BT sync, humour me on this:

In an effort to go wireless, I thought to pursue the wifi and BlueFi routes—all because I did not have a separate USB cable.  Oh yes, I’ve got the power cube with me if I need to charge my T|X but, no synch cable and I didn’t want to lug around a cradle.  Besides, that defeats the portability/travel light goal I wanted to achieve.  Anyway, after fiddling with wifi after hearing from another poster in response to a post I made on a Palm forum, wifi syncs are lickety split.  So, I tried the wifi option but, for my setup wifi became too hassled.  Thus, I started to consider BlueFi (aka Bluetooth).

Well, yes, I have placed an order for a Boxwave miniSync cable.  When this arrives, at least I may use BT for file transfer but, since I’ll have the miniSync cable, I may just avoid BT altogether.
