Itunes Library Consolidation Problem

I consolidated my itunes library to an external hard drive. I checked the HD and all the files were not placed in one folder on the HD. Not a whiz with computer talk. Made up a file called “itunes music” and put all the files into this. Redirected the library to this new file. itunes couldn’t find them. dropped new files int library which created duplicates of files which I can’t delete. What can I do about this?
