  Here’s the thing: Microsoft bought VirtualPC several years ago. I don’t know for sure, but I don’t think Virtualbox has been around or, at least, been a viable consumer product, for that long. Also, are you suggesting that Microsoft would actually get into bed with the great, evil OSS community?!

  I think I perhaps didn’t make myself clear on this. MS bought VPC to provide virtualisation of their own OS on servers. At the time there wasn’t much else out there. I don’t believe they have had much success with it, so it’s largely been a waste of money. VirtualBox hasn’t been around long and arguably isn’t as polished as Parallels or Vmware Fusion, so isn’t as viable as a consumer product but is adequate as a freebie.

  I never stated that MS would get into bed with the OSS community, but that it is one possible road they could have taken if they weren’t so pigheaded about OSS. I am sure that if Ray Ozzie had his way at MS, then there wouldn’t be quite the hostility towards OSS that there has been in the past when they saw it as something that would eat into their bottom line, as opposed to something that they could leverage to achieve certain goals without having to reinvent the wheel for no significant benefit, and focus their efforts on more key development work.
