AAPL Apple plans keynote event for September - Media Memo (168.12 +2.81) -Update-

Media Memo reports multiple music industry sources say Apple executives have told them the company is planning one of its famed keynote events for the week of Sept. 7. But in true Apple fashion, the company has been noncommittal about the exact date of the event and what it will be showing off… The timing makes sense and shouldn’t come as a surprise since Apple has traditionally used the week following Labor Day to show off new products and refresh existing product lines.

Ahh a week before the Zune HD hits. Wonderful timing. Jason Calacanis has just twittered this:

Jason is letting his new found love of Microsoft get in the way of his more analytical persona.  What possible advantage might even this Zune have over a touch combined with the app store.  Methinks he’s gone off the deep end.

he had to buy two so he could experience “The Social” squirting music to yourself is the next big thing.  Jason has taken his 15 minutes of fame and decided to bad mouth Apple.  In a week no one will care what he thinks.  You have to respect the fact that he actually spoke with his wallet as well as his mouth.

“Sources confirm no Apple tablet at Sept. event, coming in 2010
    By Jim Dalrymple

Speculation of an Apple event in September broke earlier today, but The Loop has learned the event will not include the introduction of the rumored Apple tablet.

Very reliable sources familiar with the product have said speculation of the tablet being introduced during the September event are flat out wrong. The Apple tablet, they said, would not see the light of day until the first part of 2010.

The event in September will be focused on music, which means we could see new iPods and perhaps some updates to iTunes. The tablet computer will not even be mentioned as part of the event, my sources said.

Apple will use the September event to launch new products for the holiday shopping season, typically a lucrative time for sales of devices like the iPod.”

I personally believe the lack of a tablet will be used to sell off the stock so better to not get anyones hopes up and just stay patient. If we do get something tablet like before the end of the year great! if not don’t be surprised. I know that peoples expectations keep growing higher and higher every day but much of this is unwarranted.

New iPod Touch Sizes, Claims Daring Daring Fireball

    By Jesus Diaz

John Gruber at Daring Fireball seems to be sure about the size and prices of the new iPod touch. In a post commenting on the new Zune HD, he gives all the details, and confirms the camera.

The Zune HD prices look good compared to today’s iPod Touches, but not so much compared to the new camera-equipped ones Apple is set to announce next month (16/32/64 GB for $199/299/399).

I would think Apple wants to launch the tablet in time for the Christmas season, but if we assume they are using the home grown PA Semi designed processor, you have to leave room for schedule slip.  Most processors go through a predictable cycle but since Apple doesn’t share that info, the rest is guess work.  Not to rain on the parade, but a new design can take 3-5 years.  I would assume that Apple had a design spec when they bought PA Semi back in Apr 08 and ARM/Imagination provided a physical design in late 08/Early 09 we saw clues to design verification in firmware which to me means they were working with a FPGA for verification and debug .  Silicon debug can take a year or less depending on what you find, so late 09 early 10 is definitely in the realm of possibility.  Apple may launch the SOC with limited availability and then ramp once the second run proves out.  Whatever they develop, you can rest assured that a variant will be put in the next Iphone and they are using the tablet to prove out the design.

Based on Apple’s historical product patterns, I find it highly unlikely we’d see a tablet device released in 2009. In my view it’s release in September or October would add confusion to what should be a clear and proven product line-up for Christmas.

While I agree with your logic DT, and I am not certain that we will see the tablet this year, what is the point of pulling MacWorld in Jan if you aren’t moving to a more flexible product release cycle?

Flexibility isn’t the issue: it competition (and confusion) with their already entrenched product line. A table now would hurt both MacBook and iPod Touch xmas sales.

Among other things, the January expo skewed Mac buying patterns as consumers sat on the fence postponing purchases pending new hardware product releases. Removing that distraction should improve December-quarter Mac sales results.

We all heard the report about “Cocktail”

Under the purported plan, people going to Apple’s iTunes store to download music would also be able to get an interactive bundle that includes material such as liner notes, lyric sheets, and photos, according to the Financial Times. The “interactive book” would let users play songs without having to return to the iTunes software, the story said.
The goal, apparently, is to spark sales of digital albums, with a nod to the music-listening habits of a bygone era. While Apple has long sold albums over iTunes, the online music store is renowned for the fervor with which customers download single tracks. Apple already makes album cover art available through the Cover Flow feature in iTunes.

RollingStone had a recent article on digital remastering of the Beatles.

On September 9, 2009, after a nearly 22-year wait, digitally remastered versions of all of the Beatles studio albums will be released, a press release has confirmed. Each album will feature the track listings and artwork as it was originally released in the U.K. and come with expanded booklets including original and newly written liner notes and rare photos.

Where do I get my press invite

Prediction: Apple iSlate tablet device released at special press event at the Yerba Buena center on February 9, 2010. The world is completely oblivious to the fact that the MacWorld Expo keynote is going on across the street at the same time. In followup comments, Phil Schiller states that the timing was just a coincidence, no slight to IDG intended.
