Switcher Retaliation?

Uh oh. Have the Switcher Wars begun? Check out this page from Microsoft’s site about a switcher who went the other way.

Note a few of the reasons this person dumped her Mac:
    1) She saved $450 from the price of an iBook on a PC portable with XP Home Edition loaded. Then in the next breath recommends XP Professional (a better comparison to Jaguar). Well, that kind of eats into the $450, doesn’t it? 2) Because “AppleWorks pales in comparison to Office XP”. What, like Office doesn’t even exist on the Mac?; 3) Because Internet Explorer is better than Netscape. Yeah, I sure wish I could run IE on my Mac.  rolleyes

Oh. And she can have two different user accounts - one for her and one for her husband! Imagine that!

And I love this quote: “I was up and running in less than one day.” Wow. Congratulations. One day, huh?

Plus, this person has no name, the photo looks like it came straight from a stock photo collection and the whole thing just reeks of marketing lingo. There’s no way I can believe this is a real person.

    All in all, very lame.

It depends on what you look at, obviously,
But even more it depends on the way that you see

Hmm, a fishy story indeed. I’d like to see how she could come up with a laptop comparable to an iBook for $450 less and with a full copy of MS Office? Besides, it sounds like one major ad for MS products, Windows, Office, IE. I mean if you want to be hooked to Redmond, by all means go, but I prefer choice on my computer, the ability to test new things, new solutions and new products which can change what I do with my computer.
Don’t expect MS to innovate either. If you’re happy with a PC, be my guest, I just prefer to think different(ly).

In today’s news, Microsoft Copies Apple.

In other news, the sky is still blue, water is still wet, and the Earth continues to spin around the Sun.

*Editor’s Note: Now that we’ve successfully converted our writer to a Windows PC, we will be working on getting her to try a Pocket PC. Stay tuned for more developments!

So she’s apparently a Microsoft employee?  rolleyes

Brian, you are right.  smile  I give all props to the poster at /. for finding the image.  The woman’s photo at the top of that page is indeed a stock image from Getty Images .  (Scroll down if you can’t see the image.)

Yes, that’s a real Switcher you guys at MS have.

Ha! That’s great! Maybe they thought since they reversed the image we wouldn’t be able recognize it. raspberry

Microsoft seems to have pulled this abomination.  Sad.  It’s really just plain sad.

I posted a mention of all this at TMO , including some of Brian’s comments, and some comments from Slashdot.

Can they go any lower? Wait a minute,  history has already answered that question!

It’s down, but luckily Google got a look at it before it went down.

Simply hilarious. I’d tear it apart, but it’d be far too easy, and I’m sure it’s been done many times before.

    Sad, Microsoft. Even for you.

Ah, Microsoft’s just being its usual self…

Another note: The Getty Images site does indeed contain that image. So sad… “Hey, I wonder if we can get away with using a stock photo if we flip it around. While we’re at it, let’s try that same advanced Photoshop trick on Ellen Feiss and use her in a new ad campaign!” But the site apparently can’t load in OmniWeb, so if you’ve seen the light (in terms of browser choice) like me, you’ll need to use a different browser like Internet Explorer(oiter), Net(Nerd)sc(r)ape, or Mo(God)zilla to view the stock photo that Microsoft cleverly flipped around.

News.com reports on the pulling of the story.

The ad was pulled down from Microsoft’s Web site Monday, following an inquiry from CNET News.com. Microsoft said the posting, made by Microsoft’s software marketing group, was a mistake in judgment.

Microsoft “regrets the action” and said it did the right thing in removing the page. The company has no plans for an ad campaign featuring Mac to PC “converts.”

Red-faced executives at Microsoft Corp. on Monday pulled a breezy advertisement purportedly by a free-lance writer who switched to using Windows software from the rival Macintosh (news - web sites), amid questions about whether the woman actually exists.

An employee at a public relations company hired by Microsoft, Valerie G. Mallinson of Shoreline, Wash., later acknowledged she was Microsoft’s mysterious convert. The Associated Press tracked Mallinson by examining personal data hidden within documents that Microsoft had published with its controversial ad.

“I guess I can tell the truth,” Mallinson said Monday. “It was me. I made the switch.”

    ...

Gravning confirmed Microsoft hired Rataushk for the ad.
