Hey everyone, as a faithful MGG listener, I seem to remember Dave having an issue with “auto restart after power failure” and his UPS enabling a graceful shutdown, thus disabling the “power failure” state and no auto restart.

I have a situation that “might” benefit from his solution, but I can’t seem to find or remember it.

Here is my situation:

I have a mac mini in a remote location that I use to monitor wifi traffic and network activity. It is running Windows xp in boot camp. If the power goes out, I need it to auto restart into bootcamp. In windows you would do this in the bios. My 2009 mac mini uses EFI not a bios.

I thought Dave’s solution to his UPS/autorestartafterpowerfailure might point me in the right direction.

If someone could help me find the show notes, or has a solution for me I’d be eternally grateful. (OK, well not eternally, but I’d appreciate it anyways)

Scott

Can you specify the Windows Boot partition as the startup drive in the Boot preferences on either the Mac or Windows systems?

Yeah, that’s not a problem.

The issue is enabling auto-restart after power failure while in windows.

I’m 100% sure the MGG addressed enabling auto restart when power is restored after a clean shut down a few months ago. There was something to edit in terminal, if I remember right.

I remember that discussion, it involved an argument to the shutdown command (-u I think) that makes the system halt but waits 5 minutes to shutdown, making the computer think that it was hard shutdown, therefore auto restarting.

I don’t think that this would help with your specific problem, you would need to look for something in windows that does the same thing.

There may be something in system preferences (in OSX) under Energy saver that sets it to auto restart on power failure, this setting should still work in bootcamp, although I can’t test this because I only have a laptop.
