i have recently had a problem with the internal camera on my 2006(late) core2duo iMac
the camera does not show up in system profiler and no programs find it.
i have:
1 reset the pram
2 reset the smu (i think) according to the directions on the apple site
3 never cracked the case so i dont think a cable came loose
this happened about when i udated to 10.5.7
i am now in 10.6

any ideas? or do i just have a camera the went bad?

Two things:

Do you have any third party enhancement software installed?  I use iGlasses, but I am sure there are others..

Have you tried to open Photo Boot?  iChat preferences, video pane?  Any indication there?

If not, the start up the system profiler - /Applications/Utilities - then click on USB underneath the Hardware Catagory.

If your iSight drive is NOT listed there, sounds like a hardware issue.

When you installed 10.6, do you upgrade or do a clean install?

it does not show up in photo booth. iChat or in system profiler
i did the upgrade install
i had very recently done a clean install of tiger,
then an archive and install of leopard
the camera broke after i ran the comp installer from 10.5.0 to 10.5.8

Do you have a bootable OS installed on an external hard drive? If so, I suggest you boot from another copy of Mac OS X and see if your iSight works there. If it doesn’t, you probably have a hardware problem and should take the computer to an Apple authorized service provider. If it does work, then it’s software and an archive and install is probably the quickest and easiest way to resolve it.
