Magic Mouse and the OODA loop

I’m comparing the intro to Windows 7 to the Magic Mouse. Basic war theory from the Art of War to John Boyd (OODA loops) says avoid head on fights, confuse the enemy, hit em where they don’t expect it.

Windows 7 has been like a ponderous frontal assault, telegraphed for months (years?) and even its proponents say its nothing very new. 2 days before its inception, Apple introduces a new mouse. Doesn’t seem like much, but I suspect its probably the most significant change in the everyday feel of every day web surfing in years. And its something that MSFT can’t even copy!

The best warfare is where the enemy doesn’t know what hit em. I suspect I’m rooting for the winning side.

Another art of war goodie: Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat. Thankfully, Apple has strategy (multitouch) and has been executing on tactics. Microsoft? Still trying to figure them out.

Microsoft is still fighting the desktop wars of the 1990’s. Apple is looking at where computing will be in the next decade.  Apple is selling multi touch products (iPhone, iPodTouch, MagicMouse, MacBooks). Microsoft is showing demo examples of surface environments that my be sold ‘someday’. Apple looks forward. Microsoft looks backward.

It seems to me that the Gretzky quote about skating to where the puck will be applies here.

I build computers and fix the internet.
    I Win.

Apple is paving the way to the future in ways we can use and impanelment easily. Microsoft is just throwing its money around to look cool.

This weeks edition of MacBreak Weekly was rather interesting.  One of the topics discussed was all of the multi touch built into Windows 7.  They seemed pretty impressed with it.

Mayhap. But if so they sure haven?t done a good job of letting people know. The time to let people know about what you are selling can do is when you introduce it. I have not heard on one specific feature that Windows 7 has that Vista doesn?t in all the advertising and hype. Has anyone else?                    If Windows 7 has neat multi-touch then marketing is really screwed up. You sure know that the new macs have multitouch.

Here’s another silly metaphor - if Obama got the PEace PRize for being in office on the heels of W, then Win 7 may be loved for being available after Vista. DOes 7 deserve praise?
Have not tried the new mouse yet, but I LOVE the trackpad on my MacBook Pro!

I think Leo is going out of his way to offend Mac users these days.

For a show that was recorded just after the figures and then the launch of the new machines I thought it was a really limp show.

They were complaining the other week that they had to gab on about stuff because Apple can’t do interesting stuff every week. Well they had PLENTY to talk about this week and I think they just blew it.

Totally agree with you.  He likes to say that he’s the users advocate but his personal dislike of Apple (Steve) sure gets in the way.  I can only guess that it must pain him a little to be using almost exclusively Apple stuff these days.  Andy Ihnatko alone makes the show worth listening to.  There is rarely a week that I don’t learn something from that group.
