Surrendering the holidays to Apple, Nintendo to release 3DS game handheld in February

As a wise man once said, “miss the holidays, miss the year.” No where is this truer than in the game industry.

There’s always next year. wink

That’s true in sports, but sometimes “next year” in business means “never” or that you’re out of business.

Go Cubs!

I don’t claim to be wise, but my oft-posted refrain is: “Lose the holiday season, lose the year.”

Aside from the fact that the holiday quarter represents 40% of annual retail sales, in consumer electronics the holiday quarter can make or break a product. I don’t know if Nintendo is accelerating the release date, but the bigger challenge in content availability and content distribution.

Apple has created its own for of currency in iTunes gift cards and the content available for the iPhone and iPod touch will only grow.

Perhaps that’s another benefit of the iPhone. It’s an excellent handheld gaming system that also makes voice calls. Think of it as the handheld gaming device for adults.
