Ok, I ran out os space on my hard drive. No big deal, I just shuffled stuff onto other drives, cleared out a lot of old files, and started working more and more off my external drives. Over the next few weeks though, My hard drive continued to fill up. No matter hos much I shift off, it keeps filling up. It’s getting to the point where Programs are crashing because the hard drive is full, even if there’s only one program open. If this is scratch space being used, it’s not working properly.

When I tried to track down the files, I discovered that I’m _missing_ about 20 GB of hard drive space (I.e. if I click “get info” on my partition, it says I have 132 GB on my hard drive, and only 1 GB available. When I get info for the User, Library, System, and Application folders, it comes out to about 112 GB.

Clam AV scans came out negative, short of a few suspected phising e-mails in my junk mail folder. Does anyone know of a good utility that can let me better see what exactly is taking up my hard drive space?

Try OmniDiskSweeper - it’s free and will display files on your drive sorted by size.

Oh, you rock! That was exactly what I needed.

OmniDiskSweeper located the hidden /private/var/logs/asl directory, which was housing about 24 GB of log files.

With a little research online, I discovered that apparently World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King can cause this to happen. I deleted everything that wasn’t in use, and now i have my hard drive back. Better still, I’m no longer worried that my drive might have been hacked by a trojan or something.

So thanks again for the help, it was deeply appreciated!
