08:06 AAPL Apple: Steve Jobs to keynote CES? - LoopRumors (207.00 ) -Update-LoopRumors reports it has heard whispers that Apple CEO Steve Jobs may be keynoting CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in January 2010. Apple pulled out of Macworld after last year’s January show in San Francisco. If true, this could be a launching pad for the much rumored Apple Tablet computer. There is much speculation that the device would be the “everything killer,” capable of being a computer, e-reader, videoconferencing machine, video player, gamer, and the list goes on. CES, which runs from January 7-10 in Las Vegas, would be appeal to a much wider audience than Macworld.

Mark Sigal had a piece on Friday about the tablet It’s in the Bag! The Apple Tablet Computing Device
Thus, the core thesis of this article is two-fold. One, that while Apple remains committed to cultivating its position in the legacy desktop /portable segment via the Mac, they understand that they will never be the leader of the PC market.
Two, given their dominance in mobile computing platforms, Apple will expand upon their iPhone strategy by attacking an “undefended hill” (an HP axiom) that’s less hospitable to desktops/portables; namely, the bag-carrying consumer (think: purses, backpacks, briefcases, and the like).Taking the Tablet out of your bag, you instantly notice that this is a device that can support multiple modalities in a robust fashion. A bigger screen means truer multi-touch, richer interaction possibilities, and a personal home theater experience that simply rocks (especially, when wearing decent headphones). Plus, as iPhone has proven, this is no underpowered computing device. Skype me? Sure. Video chat? In a snap. Day planner? C’mon!

The way I see it, the newspaper and magazine industry will not be saved by a tablet. Paying money for content will only work if the content is worth paying for.
WSJ app had free content for a few months. Great app. The moment they started to charge I got rid of it. I can get similar news from other apps for free.
The apps store is a perfect example of how the consumer will flock to where the cost is the least amount. Most apps are free.
The iTunes store is another example. People will pay .99 for a song rather then $14 for a CD because they only like one song.
On the other hand people will spend $600 on a iPHone instead of getting one for free because they believe it is worth the price.
A tablet will come and it will offer enough features to satisfy a number of industries. I just don’t think all to pieces are in place.
The two biggest factors in my view is battery life and internet speed. Once we can have a Tablet that can last all day and have access to 3G network almost anywhere, then we can work on content. I also think they are working hard on the chip set which is not ready yet.
I think Apple is trying to secure more video rights from Studios to allow people to rent or buy more movies anywhere, it is trying to work with the newspaper/magazine folks, and is working on some crazy things none of us smart folks even dreamed of doing with this machine.
I believe AppleInsider when they talked about this product being release in June to August window. There is still plenty of work to be done on it.
-
Well how interesting is that?
The sponge talked about August release date and the next day a newspaper said the same thing. I stand corrected that AI mentioned 1st quarter of next year not 2nd or 3rd.
I putting my money on 3rd quarter. I think Apple wants to make a big deal about the 4th generation iPhone in June and the follow that up with the iTablet in Sept.
There is no rush here folks. Lots of work to be done and Apple has its hands full with iPhone and Store expansions. We need to be patient. We will be blown away the same way we were blown away when SJ walked on Stage in 2007 and pulled out the iPhone for the first time.
There was talk about the Apple branded iPhone for two years prior to its release. So we once again talk about the iTablet for two years before we see one.

There was an interesting article about how Qualcomm wanted to get their chips into the iPhone. I personally think the more compelling product from Qualcomm is their Mirasol Displays. Mirasol Displays have stable states while showing screen renders, much like e-ink displays require no use of electricty to continue to show the same image which is what makes e-ink displays so useful as a book reader. The Mirasol Displays also rely on reflective light like e-ink displays allowing for use in direct sunlight, are capable of rapid screen refresh rates that make it ideal for video.
My next portable electronic device is going to have a Mirasol Display.

Any channel checks and do you know what size do they make Mirasol Displays in? Any big enough for a tablet?

Qualcomm needs to focus their prototype a bit. This image portrays one confused device. Electronista

Despite the existing hardware, both devices remain prototypes. The idea is appealing, as the Wi-Fi connection of the e-reader could allow for multiplayer gaming both local and online, while a Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU could power the gaming platform. The prototype reader uses a 5.7-inch, 1024x768 color e-paper display.
While not fully functional, it represents a design that should not only be capable of supporting richer colors than any other reader but also playing video.
A reader with the described features should be available by the end of 2010 and is likely to involve help from LG, Qualcomm’s key hardware partner for mirasol. Versions should include both those with and without touchscreen layers.

(11/23/2009 7:13 AM EST)LONDON ? Qualcomm Corp. has shown off a 5.3-inch full-color non-volatile MEMS-based display and claims a slightly larger version, with a 5.7-inch diagonal size, will be found in an e-reader product to deploy in fall 2010. The display features 1,024 by 768 pixel resolution and around 220 pixels per inch.
“We have a brand partner for the e-reader space to be announced in the first quarter of 2010,” said Cheryl Goodman, director of marketing for Qualcomm MEMS Technologies, speaking at Qualcomm press day held in London. -

Not so sure of “Fossil” getting it. Now there’s talk of Murdoch doing a deal to have his news searchable on Bing, but not on Google. Internet everywhere means that subscriptions aren’t going to work in my opinion. Consumers will demand instant access to whatever they want now; they’ll pay for that (like buying today’s newspaper used to be), but they won’t subscribe (except for hobbyist and professional content).
Subscription only was risky, tying himself to Bing is further cutting off from the world. Could accelerate any collapse of News Corp.
