Pretty simple, simply pretty

Me, I like a very clean and simple desktop. I usually don’t have any icons on it at all, and the dock hidden.

Warning: nudity. (tasteful though.) innocent

Umm, let me go left to right on the menubar stuff.  First is PthClock (freeware), which is a more “exciting” clock than the default one.  It’s got a drop down calendar, and if you hover the mouse over the time, you get the date too.  It also allows for color changing, and moving around.

Next is Meteorologist (freeware) which gets weather from weather.com.  It was recently profiled as a TMO Monday Mac Gadget .  It gives me the current weather for Cupertino, as well as any other (US) city.

Next is DeskShade Plus (shareware, $6.99), which I mostly use to keep my desktop looking uncluttered.  It takes your desktop image and “hides” the actual desktop with it.  It also runs a screensaver or movie as your desktop, and lets you lock you desktop without a screensaver (the lock lets you see failed attempts at passwords, in case someone tries to hax0r you).

Then we have Airport, sound, and battery, which should be familiar.  smile

All the way to the right is LaunchBar (shareware $19.95) and is probably my most indespensible tool these days.  (As soon as I get paid, they’re *definately* getting paid.)  It’s hard to describe accurately…you can control everything, and open anything (bookmarks, folders, send emails) from LB with just a few keystrokes.

I made the desktop picture; the Hard Drive (“Mr. Quackers”) icon is from xicons.com.

Not toooo exciting

The only thing of note here is the lack of icons on the desktop. I love it that way. So clean.

My desktop is WAY to scary to show right now.  Messy as can be.  but, that happens in the end of a major project.

Funny, I tried the a couple of the shareware’s Jinkies showed:

Meteo:  AWESOME!!  Love it.

DeskShade Plus:
Didn’t work for me.  It only covered/locked the first monitor, and my dock is on the second monitor, so you could still do anything you wanted to.  Useless for me

LaunchBar:

WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW
That thing is SO worth $20!!!  That is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen!!! WOW.

Thanks a ton Jinkies.

doesn’t it seem like shareware has gotten SO much more cool since OS X?

Thanks for the low down on those menubar items.  Ok so I am a curious monkey.  YoYo you have some interesting menu stuff as well.  Beside launch bar you have a mysterious icon and one further on with a stuufit icon.  Guest on the first page had a menu bar item for iTunes.

Jinkies, thanks for the link to DeskShade Plus. I’ve used it for five minutes now and I already like it.  8)

Wow Meterologist.  So coool.  I downloaded it and when I opened the
package I saw an icin for the US and thought that it would be exclusive to that side of the atlantic.  I launced it any wat and had a route around and voilla there was Dublin with a forecast of 8c and a cloud in the menu bar. And this morning it is bad rain.  Mind you I only had to look out the window to see this. Still good though and all that extra info int he menu itself.

Opps. I just checked Kilkenny Ireland and it is -18c.  NOOO WAY.  Can’t be possible.

My own photograph

red-leaves1b.jpg

I took this picture last week. (I have no icons or dock showing, so I thought it silly to show the menu bar also.)

[quote author=“jinkies”]Hey MacTad, let me see if I can help you out a bit.  smile  idea

I find desktops at Mandolux and The Apple Collection

Thanks, Jinkies!  I went to both sites and had a different reaction to each one.  The Apple Collection seemed too busy for my somewhat jumbled mind to deal with and so I didn’t do a lot of exploring.  However, Mandolux was much less busy.  Meaning that there weren’t as many screen animations and I enjoyed discovering what was there.  I’d shied away from Mandolux before because I thought they only had military themes.  I’m glad there are others as well.

For finding icons, there are several places you can go. ... And what I really dig are the new icons at RAD.E8

I went to RAD.E8 and really enjoyed the site.  I like that it was very clean and impressed that it’s all in Flash.  Since I’m trying to redesign my family’s web site, I’m seriously analyzing other sites I see for pros and cons.  Unfortunately, the music at the site drove me bonkers because I already had iTunes playing and didn’t want to hear the music on the web site.  I wish I could have turned that feature off, but otherwise, what I saw of it was top-notch.

Hope that’s helpful for a start!  big grin

Your suggestions have been great, Jinks.  Thanks lots.  I’m thinking of maybe going with some sort of red wallpaper.  I’m very partial to blues in almost all hues, but the only reds I deal with tend toward the pinks.  It’s all very soothing.  I think the red will be like a bracing cold shower first thing in the morning.  I’ll look at some icons later today.

After getting Mteorologists I tried Desk Shade and Launch Bar.  Brilliant.

Is the Hacklog feature in Desk Shade effective over a network?
