I think the iPad will have to have some capacity to output given the presence of iWork. Pages is, at the moment, for producing hard copy.
If it doesn’t have some capacity to output to a printer then that could be a problem as far as I am concerned.

When I am making reservations, buying tickets, or my daily trip to amazon, I always print a confirmation. Do none of you buy things that require a printout of a ticket? The output to print is huge for me. I want one bad, wil will wait to get my grimy paws on one before making a purchase.
I used to, but now I print to a PDF and mail it to my iPhone for easy reference. I can’t wait to quit The Seattle Times on April 3, 2010, coinciding with the release of the iPad. No more paper to accumulate for a special trip to the recycler. I wonder how HP is making out with the ink tank business…I can’t tell you how glad I am to be out of THAT money drain…

I just read the ipad iwork section and it referenced emailing to share the document. I do not think there will be a print output. I went to a Jason Aldean concert a couple of weeks ago, my ticket was printed from ticketmaster. I pay most of my expenses online, but I always print a confirmation to keep until I see it show up online. I know some of you are making light of this, but I can assure you this will be a deal breaker for some. How long did it take to get copy and paste on the iphone? Looks like the MBPro will be hanging around for a while longer.
I just downloaded an app for Mandalay Bay which is where I am staying the end of the month, way cool. There are just to many apps out there.

Benoir, I did not know there were apps for printing. I found some and after starting with the free ones, (did not work) worked my way up to the $5 app from Eurosmartz and it works fine. I assume this is how Apple plans on people being able to print from the ipad. This is a work around that works, but not what I was looking for. I wonder what the average count of apps is for iphone owners?

I currently have 53. About 20-25% of them I bought with the most expensive being about $15, but most being about $2-4.
Often I will download several free apps that do the same thing then try them all out (I am currently trialling free Formula 1 apps). I’ll keep my favourite of the and delete the others.
I am not afraid to delete apps that simply don’t cut it. That includes one or two that I have paid for. I see little point in having apps I won’t use sitting on my iPod/Mac.
I also do the “print to PDF, email to iPhone” thing for most of my mobile documentation needs. Unfortunately, Amtrak’s barcode reader did not like the iPhone’s display when I tried it. Would be interesting to see if any Kindle user are able to get barcodes to scan. For Amtrak, I complete my transaction with the iPhone, then have to go to an actual human to issue the tickets. I just show them the confirmation code, they check my ID, and off I go. It will be nice (someday) if the conductor would just look at your Amtrak app and do a fist bump to “punch” the ticket stub. You can already bump money across. In the meantime, I still need to find a networked printer from a laptop to be able to scan and go.

Here is a link to some of the key new feature of the Iphone OS 3.2
Improved Text Support
The iPhone OS 3.2 provides significant support for impressive text input and rendering for all the applications such as word processors, PDF files that requires sophisticated text-handling capabilities. iPhoneOS 3.2 features a Core Text framework containing a set a simple, high-performance C-based interfaces for laying out text and handling fonts that enables users to manage the placement of text on the screen.
iPhoneOS3.2 also includes an UIKit framework with new protocols that lets you implement customization of text-input objects and generate PDF files from your application’s custom content. UIKit framework includies many additional classes and protocols like UIBezierPath class and UIScrollViewDelegate protocol, that enables you to create vector-based shapes and process zoom-related events in a scroll view in a effective manner. Developers can also include different fonts in the applications they build by including a UIAppFonts key in their Info.plist file.
File and Document Support
iPhone OS 3.2 supports exchange and opening of files which indicates the implementation of more document-centric applications on the iPad. iPhone OS3.2 provides amazing File-sharing as well as Document support. Users can not only modify the contents of the directory easily by copying files out, deleting files, or dragging new files but also share files by simply including UIFileSharingEnabled key in its Info.plist file. The Document support of the iPhone OS 3.2 allows application to register the supported file types with the system and receive notifications when a file of the given type needs to be opened. These notifications can be obtained by including the CFBundleDocumentTypes key in its Info.plist file.
Applications like Eurosmartz should be able to print to pdf using their print server but I don’t think Apple will be providing support in the initial 3.2 release. An AppleInsider rumor suggested Apple was working on printing for future releases.
Sources who talked to Apple’s business unit also say the company is working on some additional features that haven’t been publicly announced yet. These include support for direct network printing from iPad apps, as well as support for accessing shared files from a local file server.
OK, the eurosmartz app will not print web pages for me, keeps coming up with error messages. I thought it was to good to be true. The app launched a browser with a print button in the top right, just what I was hoping Apple would do, just doesn’t work.

I’ve never purchased anything or paid a bill in Safari on my iPhone, so I wonder if it offers the ability to print a receipt at all. The NYT app for the iPhone, for example, offers the user the option to Save an article, but not to print one—an option that the web version of the Times gives. Perhaps the OS4 for iPhone/iPad/iPod Touich will include a Print command. But Wi-Fi would still be the only method.
Most of the online bill paying I do is followed up by a confirmation email. Each of the vendors also provides account information on their Website allowing me to check account status, payment history and current charges.
There’s also credit card payment documentation that provides a secondary source of payment evidence.
When I make purchases at an Apple retail store I’m offered the options of paper receipt, email receipt or both.
While some might see the lack of an easy print option on the iPad as a drawback, I consider it inconsequential. I can’t print from my home audio system, my iHome clock radio nor from my TV but that doesn’t stop me from enjoying the content and programming offered through those mediums.

You are half of me, I passed a hundred a while back. I really like the sync page where icons can be arranged easily and/or deleted.

But you can print from your laptop, and that is the point, we were not discussing a/v equipment.
I will be going to the airport next week, I will take a printed confirmation.
I will be checking into a hotel and will have my confirmation page to show amount already paid, room type, comps, etc…
The shows, dinner reservations, the list goes on and on. There is one more print app I am going to try. Getting agitated with the last app.
