Related observation: I did a little back of the envelope calculation at dinner tonight. Three of my friends bought iPhones at the initial release. Nine are buying iPads at release. Now some of this can be accounted for by the relative ease of purchase, and some of it by the already robust number of apps. But, I nonetheless find this noteworthy.
I just transferred some stock over to my Ameritrade account from another brokerage house. For this small effort I will get a $400 Apple gift card. This will go toward a 16 GB iPad as soon as the card arrives. Not a pre-order but pretty close.
Guess I wanted bragging rights for an almost free iPad.

Is this offer still open? How much stock required?
The fine print said that transfers must be made by March 31, 2010. Only one transfer is permitted. You must decide which of three gift cards to get and whether it will be for iTunes products or hardware. If you go for the $800 card you will pay income tax on the amount, and presumably not for the other lesser two cards.
On the Ameritrade website I located and downloaded the form used for transferring funds and filled it out. Then I called Ameritrade at 1-800-669-3900 and talked with a representative. He marked my account flagging the incoming funds to be credited to this offer.

I like Ameritrade, and everyone I have talked to on the phone has been very helpful. Unfortunately, at my age and income level, these transfer amounts are a little to high for me.
