Market Cap Countdown:  AAPL vs MSFT

    Is time to begin this countdown.

    Today’s close:

    AAPL = $222B.

    MSFT = $275B.

    AAPL needs to appreciate more than 24% from here or MSFT declines by similar amount in order for AAPL’s market cap to surpass MSFT’s.

    If the 5% AH pop survives into PM trading tomorrow, we’ll have gone almost a quarter of the way. Where I’m standing now, this seems a no-brainer by the end of the year, unless there’s a broad market fall. But AAPL will probably take a breather in the short-term.

    Oh, and the day this happens, I’m sure Steve will send a congratulatory “historical importance” note to the employees (and maybe one a quite different kind to Bill Gates! :grin: )

    I can’t possibly see why anyone would really care, beyond it’s symbolism it’s of little relevance. Apple isn’t an anti-Microsoft, so why bother about AAPL vs MSFT, we’re not talking about sporting teams are we?  I hope that our interest in AAPL transcends such puerile considerations.

    Yes it is petty. But there are some long standing scores that need settling. This really is proof that cheaters don’t win. That is why this is important. I have had a bottle of champagne in the fridge since 97 specifically to celebrate this occasion.

    To me, is a triumph of “making insanely great products that truly improve quality of life” over “making just good enough products that maximize profits”.  My dislike of Microsoft business practices runs deep e.g.  intentionally build OS that need new hardware to work well.

    What Ratty and Mace said. Plus, what Steve Jobs himself said. And if you haven’t seen it, I’d highly suggest watching this movie. It’s a fictionalized account and has to be taken with a grain of salt, but it explains why SJ could be taking shots at Microsoft even on the same stage with Bill Gates in 2007.

    Another point - I think it was sleepygeek in one of the threads who said that Microsoft has slowed down innovation in the tech sector by 10 years or so just by the fact of their existence as a monopoly. I’d much rather see the likes of Google (for all the flack we give Eric Schmidt on these boards) compete with Apple. Finally, let’s not forget that it’s not even Bill who’s running Microsoft today. It’s this guy, and here’s what he said about the iPhone. So the joke will be on him.

    When innovative companies get ridiculed, I think they can deservedly celebrate their ultimate victories. Michael Dell famously laughed at Steve Jobs, and the joke was on him a few years later (and yes, SJ did send a memo to Apple employees). Now it’s Ballmer’s turn.

    Gates would probably take it well, with some humility and maybe a congratulations.

    Ballmer will blow a gasket.

    Exactly!

    Gates moved on to philanthropy - but his Frankenmonster lives on. For now.

    I am guilty.  I admit to enjoying puerile behavior from time to time.  One of the joys of teaching young children is that they encourage and revel in my puerile moments.

    And, like Mace, I consider MSFT evil.  For too many years I was their serf.  Allow us a little Schadenfreude.

    At what share prices are Apple and MSFT roughly equal in market cap?  I guess we can assume MSFT would stay about where it is now.

    Some historical stats on the subject of AAPL vs MSFT market cap:

    From a ratio standpoint, the biggest difference in the two marketcaps came on 3/26/99 when MSFT was 449.5B and AAPL was 4.5B for a ratio of 99 to 1.

    AAPL actually has been bigger than MSFT before with its max difference coming 7/11/86 when it was worth 2.36B to MSFT’s 692M for a ratio of 3.4 to 1.

    The last time AAPL was bigger than MSFT was 12/19/89.

    MSFT I believe holds the all-time market cap record of 614.7B on 12/27/99.  I’d have to think that AAPL is a better bet than any other company right now to eventually take that out.

    I believe Microsnot will decline at the same rate that Apple ascends. My prediction is just before Thanks Giving!
