    The price, while reflecting added technology, is $100 higher than the last model. People wanting to upgrade their home theater systems are not happy; they also wanted Blue Ray.

    Not as long as ISPs put data caps on accounts. Streaming HD quality video and/or downloading HD quality content even semi-regularly eats those caps up fast.

    Can this baby run AppleTV software?

    With so many ports, a better name would be MP Mac.  MP=multi-purpose grin.

    Comcast is around 250 Gig a month - I’ve never been able to use 1/2 of that.

    I’m a little surprised but not shocked at the new base price.  Having said that, it’s no surprise whatever that the AV crowd isn’t happy…,they never have been but seem to order anyway.  Would also agree that blue ray is DOA.  I’m happy to see the HDMI connection finally.  Hate the hdcp that accompanies it but it is ubiquitous.

    Finally!! Traditionally Apple computers have had a separate mini jack for headphones and microphone (Line out/line in). This allows you to use the Headset that comes with your iphone . I.e no more silly Logitech USB headsets.

    HDMI is long overdue.  Don’t know what they were thinking previously, but thanks for listening to your customers, Steve.

    Absolutely stunning design.

    Price seems $100 too high, then again, the components stack up quite well to Dell’s own “high style” SFF PC (I’m not talking about that Athlon64-based $249 SFF model).

    I never thought that a Mac would spawn an HDMI port.  That, much like the front-facing camera and LED flash for iPhone 4 (I suspect), is an example of Apple listening to its customers.

    I think the extra $100 creates a new gap in the lineup, possibly sending us a clue.

    The design continues to slim down an already tiny machine. Back in January I got the server version as a bridge to a new macbook pro, with the intent to repurpose it for the TV room. HDMI would make the new machine perfect for this application. Obviously that won’t help me, but I’ll bet plenty of fence sitters will now go in for one.

    OS X Server is not for the uninitiated though… Hence the need to fill the lineup with something a bit more, um, easy - at a lower price point.

    I have a Mac mini hooked up to my HDTV. I like streaming movies online and do it often, but Blu-Ray will remain appealing until we can finally stream videos at 1080p on an affordable home Internet connection. My DSL can barely play NetFlix or Hulu at VGA resolution, which is still watchable but seems a terrible waste of a beautiful 42” HDTV.

    Can someone explain the positioning of Mac mini?

    Is it a multi-purpose Mac:

    a.  Those who want to try out Mac experience;

    b.  Low cost Mac for MacOS/iOS developers;

    c.  Low cost server for Mac geeks and SMEs;

    d.  Lower migration cost for corporate wanting Mac environment;

    e.  Home digital lifestyle hub;

    f.  Fat AppleTV/digital DVD player;

    I say all of the above, regarding Mace’s comment.

    With the first version or two Apple positioned the mini as option “a”, a cheap system for switchers to use with their existing display and peripherals. But in time people have found that it’s good for switchers, for Mac users on a budget, for servers, home entertainment systems, and more. It’s similar to the way iOS devices have also become a gaming platform. It may not be Apple’s original intent, but if it helps sell more units, why not embrace that?

    In the past few years my computer usage has evolved quite a bit and the Mac mini is a big part of that. Today my primary computer is a Mac mini in my home entertainment center. For me it’s a budget desktop, a digital lifestyle hub, and a fat Apple TV. And instead of owning a laptop I have an iPad and iPhone for around-the-house and on-the-go computing.
