iPod Touch Battery Life and iOS4

Like many others I upgraded my 2nd gen iPod Touch to iOS4, and apparently like many others it has massacred the battery life on my Touch. I’ve tried the workarounds which are basically turning off all of the connectivity features, which defeats the purpose of what I bought it for. The workarounds don’t really work anyway. Has anyone else been able to restore a Touch to the previous OS? Combined mail accounts, iBooks, and app folders are not worth a 75% hit to battery life.
