Amazing new products this year

  • Posted: 26 July 2010 07:05 AM

...said Steve Jobs, Apple?s CEO. ?iPad is off to a terrific start, more people are buying Macs than ever before, and we have amazing new products still to come this year.?

Okay, time to start figuring out what this means. Is new simply new versions of the iPod touch and Mac upgrades? Or, is it something like the long awaited “hobby gets a real job” rethink of Apple TV? Is it a new 7” camera enabled iPad?  With cameras added to iPod touch and a 7” iPad, is apple giving everyone FaceTime for Christmas (for Mac too)?

The 7” iPad is interesting, if it adds a camera then don’t you have to rev the 10” version too? How would you price it (with or without a camera)? How would this price impact pricing of the iPod touch? If you jam down the touch, what does a Nano cost?

Apple tv? New price point? A version with a display too? Add an old fashioned DVR?

    Something else?

I need to start planning my holiday shopping, so I’m hoping AFB could help me out!

    Steve says that every year.

Remember, EVERY product is magical and amazing….

... don’t read anything especially earth-shattering into that statement.

Here is the PC World Speculation on the subject:

“So what has Apple got up its sleeve? My best guess is that we’re going to see the oft-rumored overhaul to Apple TV that could bring streaming television to the set-top box. It’s also possible we might see iTunes in the cloud. Then again, since the next annual event on Apple’s now-predictable announcement schedule is iPods, maybe the iPod Touch will be getting front- and rear-facing cameras.”

I have no information at all, but I’ll speculate that if they can, Apple will want to release an iPod Touch and possibly an iPod with front and back facing cameras in order to increase the number and broaden the scope of FaceTime users. Apple is making a huge bet on FaceTime. They think they can push it from niche to mass market. Even though Apple has promised to make FaceTime an open standard, from a marketing perspective, it will - at least for a year or two - be a huge differentiator from other mobile devices.

Also, I feel strongly that Apple will NOT come out with any additional iPad devices until the Spring. It just makes no sense for them to push out a new device with no competition in the space and with the current device selling faster than they can make them.

There’s certainly no reason for additional iPad SKUs before the end of the year. The global rollout continues and with demand as high at is there’s no reason to confuse consumers or add to manufacturing complexities.

Apple will not do any changes on the iPod Touch UNTIL the “Back to School” free Touch with a computer is finished, that ends September 7th.  They use this to goose computer share and move out existing inventory on the Touch.

“Amazing new products” = updates of existing ones, I’m guessing, as it has been in the past.  I don’t think anything dramatically different will be added to Apple’s line, except maybe the Bluetooth trackpad, and that’s just fine.  Also, ramping up iPad and iPhone while trying to see if there’s a way to retool the existing iPhone 4 (so as to not continue giving away free cases until next June) would take a huge chunk of time and resources out of any company.

I’m hoping they come out with a 3D printer, like this: http://www.makerbot.com/

Apple practically started the entire “Desktop Publishing” movement when they came out with a laser printer.  Imagine what would happen if Mac users could print out objects, parts and figurines with the same ease.

If they were retooling iPhone 4 it would most likely affect antenna design for iPhone 5 and there is plenty of time.  I would think Apple will move to a multi antenna design since the higher speeds of HSPA+ and LTE get the best speeds using MIMO

Again, too niche I am afraid.

I expect an iMac and Mac Pro refresh cycle. A window dressing upgrade of laptops and an iPhone 4 version of the touch.

FaceTime will be enabled for iChat across computers and phones/iPad/Touch (with a new camera for Touch).

Bandwidth requirements will triple within a year. If you haven’t tried FaceTime, check it out.

It’s like Skype, only in High Def!

FaceTime may be the “secret” new app in iLife, but perhaps only for iMacs and MacBook’s with iSight cameras. I have a Mac Pro and my monitor lacks a camera and adding a third party one may not be kosher.

Of course it won’t be enabled initially for 3rd party cameras. The company IS in the hardware business and it is an enticement to buy their hardware.

I still have the original iSight camera released and have it plugged into a 2009 MacPro Quad Core (using a FW400-800 converter). Works great with the 30” Cinema Display I inherited at work.

(Have never been able to get either of my Unibrain Fire-i cameras to work with OS X, though all documentation says they should.)

Any 3rd party camera that Apple may eventually allow into the FaceTime realm (aka officially support) will have high technical specs to ensure the best possible quality.

Don’t be so quick to “poo poo” another model iPad - Remember what Apple did with it’s iPod mini (the best selling iPod at the time)

And yes, iLife is due as well.  Not sure if FaceTime will be included, as iChat should be the home for that sort of thing - unless iChat is being retired.

    C’mon Apple TV!!!!!!!!!!  smile

FWIW, Gruber “hypothesizes” that new Mac Pro, iMac, and Cinema Displays are being released tomorrow…

    http://daringfireball.net/linked/2010/07/26/the-talk-show-returns

My pal Dan Benjamin is off the sauce and we?re celebrating by putting our podcast back on the air, on a weekly schedule. Listen live this Wednesday at 1pm ET. We?ll have much to talk about, what with the new Mac Pros (finally, right?), speed-bump iMacs, and the gorgeous new 16:9 27-inch Cinema Display that Apple might hypothetically release tomorrow.

UPDATE: Doubly-hypothetical, but who knows, maybe even that desktop multitouch trackpad device I first mentioned last October, too.
