The iPad is Hot in Small Business

    BEN BAJARIN |  SEPTEMBER 19, 2011 3:23 AM

Interestingly so far in our study over 85% of small business owners we surveyed are either using the iPad in some way or plan to purchase and use one within the next year

    Breath taking.

The L.A. Four Seasons isn’t the first hotel to bring the iPad into hotel rooms. A number of luxury hotels have started adding the iPad to the amenities offered with a room, with the iPad being used to order from room service and pay the bill in addition to allowing quick and easy access to the Internet.

FaceTime and iOS as a whole should be compliant with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) security rules, an Apple spokesperson suggests. The standard is important in the US healthcare industry as in order for devices to qualify for government funding, they must ensure that only authorized people will be able to access Electronic Protected Health Information, or EPHI. Encryption is effectively mandatory.

“iPad supports WPA2 Enterprise to provide authenticated access to your enterprise wireless network,” the Apple representative writes in an email. “WPA2 Enterprise uses 128-bit AES encryption, giving users the highest level of assurance that their data will remain protected when they send and receive communications over a Wi-Fi network connection.

When the iPhone was introduced, Apple had a long history of focusing on consumers and ignoring the business markets. This actually made a lot of sense since the business sector was already locked up by Microsoft and a few others.

However, in the second year of its existence, Apple introduced a slew of improvements that one by one knocked down barriers for the iPhone to enter the Enterprise. And the march of progress has continued albeit FAR slower than I would like.

I think that business was one of Steve Job’s blind spots. I would take all of Steve’s blind spots in spades to keep him working at Apple, but that is not to be. One of my hopes under the new regime is that Apple becomes more business friendly. Tim Cook is a very smart businessman and he seems to have ideas of his own. If he thinks that Apple should be more business friendly then it will happen and it will happen quickly and methodically.

Like all things with the Apple transition, we hope to retain the best of Jobs and correct his few glaring weaknesses. It’s probably not going to go down that way, but one can always hold out hope.

All Nippon Airways to deploy 6,000 Apple iPads to train stewards

?The Japanese carrier said this week it will arm each of the company?s roughly 6,000 flight attendants with an iPad tablet, a move that could reduce training costs by about ?200 million ($2.6 million), according to the Nikkei business daily,? The September quarter iPad unit sales will astound many observers following the release of the earnings report. Small and large businesses will factor heavily into the unit sales results. I’m interested in the potential cost savings to small businesses from deploying iPads versus mobile PCs.
