  ASP for the hardware product lines derived from Apple report

  1262 Macs
  157   iPod
  647   iPhone
  558   iPad —this one’s unexpected.  Perhaps big education purchases.

  I was surprised by the $558 iPad ASP.  But that’s OK.  This is Apple’s pretty-high-volume, lower-ASP companion to the iPhone-iPad one-two punch.  And margins?  Better than ever!

  iPhone and Mac ASP were within most peoples’ expectations, I’d think.

  iPod ASP was lower than I expected as well.  More adjustments for next time.

  Thanks for doing this so quickly! Are you surprised because the ASP is lower than you expected? If yes, that might be due to sales of the $399 iPad 2 as well as education purchases.

  I think he’s suggesting that there were a lot of education purchases at the $399 price point. But it’s strange that this pricing was only in place for a couple weeks.

  Large corporate/educational orders?  At $399/$529 it wouldn’t take too many to affect the ASP.

  It’s my sense - probably wrong - that they sold a lot of iPad 2 units when the price dropped. I visited a couple of stores in NYC just after the new iPad was released and the sales folks remarked that the 2 was flying off the shelves. Anecdotal, I know. And I’m not sure how much staying power the 2 will have, even at the reduced price point. But I suspect a lot of folks on the fence because of price jumped off the fence quickly.
