WWDC 2012 ....“we’ve all been waiting for”
-
The more I think about Siri-enabled automobiles, the more intriguing it becomes.
Am I the only person who currently already interacts with his car as if it was a sentient being? The radio, the cd player, the hard drive music selections, the GPS, the cruise control, the climate system…..I’m presently interacting with them by familiar touch, but I’d rather do it another way….And talking to my car when it won’t argue with me back….hmmmm ( quiet Mercel).

I agree that Siri in the car is going to be great. But the biggest part of this is thatso many major automakers are getting behind it. Siri will be the industry standard from day one. Wow. Apple clearly is investing massive amounts of money in Siri and has conveyed to every automaker that Siri is here to stay. This has SJ written all over it. The next big shift from Apple is this move to voice. It’ll play out slowly over the next 5-10 years and Apple will very likely lead the entire way. This is going to drive iPhone and iPad adoption like you wouldn’t believe. No new products are needed other than annual refreshes of iPhone and iPad. Nothing else matters.
And the control console in my g37 is an iPad, filled with entertainment, travel and info apps, all available with a simple voice command through Siri….all needs met

AAPL: to boldly go where no stock has gone before

Wait, was Nissan/Infiniti listed? Actually don’t recall them among the nine automakers.
BMW sure got top billing though. Long-time Apple partners get that little extra recognition.

Siri is the future, and I consider it more important long term than the iOS layer it currently sits on top of as an interface.
Once battery technology has improved a great deal, we will have autonomous consumer robotics, which we will want to be powered by a seemingly omnipotent AI that can be conversed with in natural language for commands and queries.
That may sound a bit like wishful thinking, but I have no doubt thats where Siri will end up inside of in 10 years time - $10,000+ Robotic servants for the home and workplace.
That is what I want to see at WWDC 2020.

I got the impression that Siri is more a product of the the original Siri team and Scott Forstall though I’m sure Steve had plenty of input.
This bodes very well for the innovation machine.
NO ONE will be able to match Siri on polish, ease of use, and occasional magic. Siri will be still more impressive in 2013.

Let’s go with voice, not Skynet

Siri will integrate but it’s up to automakers to keep it simple to adjust the AC and stuff. I don’t want To hear about Siri turning someone’s AC to 90 degrees F in the middle of a hot summer. Note also Siri remains, perhaps permanently, dependent upon the cloud for ALL functionality. Siri won’t be Mission Critical anytime soon.

“Siri, floor it so we can smoke Ensign’s G37!”
-
...this started with Gregg Talking about being unimpressed after the banner said “what we have been waiting for”. And I agree with him.
The banner was quoted out of context. The “we” clearly refers to developers and/or Apple engineers; not investors, analysts or even consumers. Developers are looking forward to the entire week, not just the keynote presentation. We investors have plenty to digest from the keynote.

Hah. Unless you modded it, aren’t we talking a tie here?
Don’t forget, Ensign likes his warp speed. Might be a close race to 40 mph, the way Federighi and Racer OS X were neck and neck.

Uhhhhh, who decided to buy SIRI? This is entirely SJ’s doing. Everyone else is just along for the ride.

I think mine might be one year newer (does that even matter?) so I might be able to take him. And I’d have to bet a bottle of Goose on the outcome in which case there’s no way I would ever lose.

Would the reaction to the Macbook Pro Retina have been different if it was introduced as a new product line? (which it essentially is).
cant help but feel they should have called it The Macbook X or something.

It’s the new MacBook Pro. It’s fine by me. Would’ve made no difference.
Besides, the true reaction is: “Ships: 2-3 weeks”

I was particularly impressed by the breadth of the announcements. Apple covered a lot of ground and, surprisingly, a lot of new ground with this WWDC.
John Gruber noted this too. In this three takaways from WWDC he noted:
On the software side, Apple has ? dare I say finally ? become a company that can walk and chew gum at the same time. Remember back in 2007 when Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) was delayed six months because, Apple flat-out admitted, they had to pull engineering talent from Mac OS X to work on iOS 3? They don?t seem to have that problem any more.
Today, Apple has two OSes that are both in active concurrent development. Year-over-year, it?s hard to say which OS has seen the most improvement.

Keep in mind folks that google has a car that already drives itself. With android and their own tablet interface, you could have all that same information and entertainment without the distractions of having to drive. Now you’re free to do anything….. That could be tough to beat.
