If Apple really wants to go thermonuclear, they’d price a bare-bones version at $249 or less. Optional upgrades for memory and LTE would bring ASP and margins up to “normal” levels. But I think the headline price needs to be lower than $299.

Possibly, BUT the iPod Touch, which is rumored to get a refresh in Oct., is a big seller and a low priced iPad mini would definitely impact sales.  I know Apple doesn’t shy away about canabalizing it’s own products, I just think $299 is the sweet spot for the price of the iPad mini.

Edit: And of course we don’t want the iPad mini to have a severe impact on the 10” iPad either.

Tim Cook: iPad is 91% of all tablet web traffic. I don’t know what these other tablets are doing.

Looks like it will be called iPad Mini with this new story.  Also, the iPod Nano is rumored to sport WiFi capability.

I don’t know what it will be called, but I highly doubt it will be called “mini”. Extremely doubtful.

I’m sure it’s been mentioned before but why not simply iPad Jr.?

As far as naming conventions go, “Junior” is almost never used unless it truly is targeted at children. “Junior” is insulting to many adults so they simply won’t buy it. Some major movie theater chains offer “Junior” size popcorn and the reason they do so is because they don’t actually want to sell any “Junior” size popcorns. Just changing the name of a small popcorn to “Junior” actually reduces sales of that size by 50%+ overnight.

iPad “Junior” will never see the light of day. Mini makes perfect sense in light of what the product is and in light of Apple’s historical naming conventions.

-1000 to the iPad Junior idea. One of the biggest debacles in tech history was the IBM PC “junior”.  No company in their right mind would taint a product like the iPad with that name.

I stand corrected, it was a dumb suggestion.

Ok, how about this one. Let’s call it the iPa. It’s 1/3 smaller than iPad. (wink wink)

Or iPal (a close friend of the iPad).
