Doesn’t apple own fundamental multitouch functionality patents?
-
I thought they were granted some serious multi-touch interface patents about two years ago!?
Why is apple not putting that in the fore front of their battle against android phones?
It seems they rely on other IPs for the patent wars.
And even recently the dropped multi-touch from their list of claims against , I believe Motorola or one of the other manufacturers .What am I missing here.. To me that is a key patent .. And one of the most impressive changes introduced by iPhone and then copied by everyone.
Without access to multi-touch, other os s will be doomed!
Any thoughts?

You save the big ones for last. Once they have been used, the competition can set fair value for licensing and/or challenging them, and the bounds of application are known.

Apple didn’t invent multitouch they have patented many of the areas specific to the implementation on the iPhone. If you look at the patents in play in the Samsung Federal trial and the second HTC complaint at the ITC, you’ll see a number of fundamental areas which will require major changes if they are found in violation, but these have yet to go through the slow legal process.

Yes.. They did not invent it but It seems apple got a whole bunch of patents when they bought finger works and also they hold a pretty substantial patent on multi touch screen technology..that would apply to all mobile device..
And quite few multi-touch processes. ..I would think these would be enough to kill the competition

Apple has a large and growing arsenal of patents, but until they make it through the court, with success, they are of limited value.
Apple has definitely raised the bar on multitouch, but the question remains wether the patents will be invalidated due to prior art or obviousness.
Bill Buxton has compiled a history of multitouch and many of Apple’s patents will have some prior art challenges so, we have to wait for some more success in the courts. -
Thanx Pats.. That is a amazing compilation article!
