Windows machines have a “grace period” of a few seconds when the screensavers starts. If you tap the touchpad the screensaver turns off before the password lock screen opens. I can’t find the setting for this on my Mac. The Mac locks immediatlely and I have to enter my password many times a day.
There is indeed a “grace period” you can set before the password must be entered. You can set it by going to System Preferences > Security & Privacy. There you’ll see “Require password…” with some options like “immediately” or “5 seconds” after sleep or screen saver begins.
