Open/Save frustration in Mavericks

I can’t seem to figure this one out. In the Open/Save dialog of all non-Apple apps, there is a drop down in the top bar that shows the path of the current folder and a list of recently used folders. However, when I am using Preview or TextEdit, the Open/Save dialog just has an iCloud or On My Mac button icons to adjust the file view; the drop down is missing. The recent folders list is super useful, but I cannot figure out if it’s possible to get it to appear in these Apple apps. Anyone have any idea how to do it?

Hmmm. Got a lot of views of this but no one has any answers. I just prowled around on the Apple boards and found the same unanswered question.

When I try to save in TextEdit, I see a “recent places” selection. I have the usual “desktop” and such, iCloud, then “recent places”.

    Same is true in Preview.

Hmm. You’re right. I never save anything with Preview just use it to look at stuff quickly. It is in the Save dialog (same as all other apps), but not in the Open dialog. That’s weird.
