I too love the look of 10.1… but I have a soft spot for 9.x
I grew up with 6, 7, 8, and 9 and am not so comfortable just switching over…. I will use OS X, but still will not bastardize Pre-X OS
I wish there was a URL or group of people who felt as I do…. that there still is so much that can be done…..
Making OS 9 beautiful as visually pleasing as OSX isnt hard…. I am sure that there are almost infinite possibilities to improve 9 as is.
It is possible to Retrofit OS 9…...
I am not alone…. No, its not a jet feuled rocket car, but it is classic… and like a old classic car… i want to shine it up and retrofit it with new tech keeping the shape and (soul) of OS 9.x
It’s funny you should post this in light of the release of Mac OS 9.2.1. One of our sources who has been beta-testing the new release for months, says it is the best Mac OS ever .
For me, I will use Classic whenever I need to, but I think Mac OS X is a much better environment for me.
I am sticking by My OS 9.2.1, anyone wants to convert me to OS X will have a hard time till I can remove some of the aqua as a trade for performace and for workability
Suffice it to say that you are not alone. I am a member of a MUG where the average member age is around 50. I think pretty much all those guys refuse to even give Mac OS X a try. Heck, they still have an Apple 2 SIG. People, give it up! (Apple 2 I mean, hehe). I think that when Apple finalizes OS 9 with OS 9.3, it will be a very stable, very fast OS that will serve people for a long long time. But I also have a feeling that you will have an application freeze, and that few companies will continue to develop OS 9 apps once Apple stops shipping Classic pre-installed (which will happen at some time in the possibly distant future, I can almost guarantee that).
Untill adobe gets off thier duff its a moot point for me its all about apps apps apps and how much it will cost to upgrade them for osx it quartz grapics are a real tease right now its just a waste or ram to boot in classic from osx right now I have to stick with 9 those elippsis in the file names really bug me as well lets say my toe is in the water but im not really ready to make the plunge yet

I don’t think it’s a matter of Adobe “[getting] off their duff”—they’re working on it, these things take time. I have no doubt they see the value of getting their wares on X (and as a graphic designer, I’m looking forward to it too! ).
As far as running X on a daily basis goes, the improvements in 10.1 will have me switching over when it’s released. And hey! They even tackled the problem with the ellipsis!
I use to be an early or first adopter. Now that my OS 9.1 runs so well, gives me no trouble, and does all I need for it to do, It seems it would be jinxing myself to switch over to 9.2 or OS X.
At some point it will be time to change over, but there will always be room for OS 9 on one of my Macs.
I imagine I will have a Classic partition on my X box (that’s the real X box, and not that “other” thing from MS) for years to come, though it will always be a small partition. You never know when you might need to fire up an old Classic app…
<sidenote>Looks like Apple screwed up.. its supposed to be “The quick brown fox JUMPS over the lazy dog.”, otherwise you don’t include the whole alphabet (without the S). Ok, back to your regularly scheduled topic.</sidenote>
As someone who used one of the first macs, and then did not touch one until the iMac came out (could not afford a computer) I am still learning about Mac OS - I don’t want to switch to X yet, even though I received a CD with my recent iBook. 10.1 looks better though.
I wonder if the last version of OS9.whatever will be will be near perfect - a bit like cars through their production run, often the last ones are the best value, because by then, the design shortcomings are reduced as far as possible, and everyone wants the new model.
I also wonder if Apple are being careful releasing OS 9 updates always as OX 9.2.X, so they can have loads of them before they reach 10….just in case OS X just does not make it - I await the flames…
This reminds me of when, at the tender age of 12, I saw the Apple II die after learning everything about it. I absolutely hated macs. I knew how to do anything on that old command line and the whole GUI thing just didn’t make sense to me and I didn’t mess with a computer again for 5 years. Now I’m a Unix Admin and a die hard Apple fan. I think all mac users stand to gain a lot from learning OSX because you will be learning Unix. For the first time being a mac expert would give you knowledge that can be used in many OS’s like Linux, Solaris, HP-UX, AIX, etc. And best of all, Windows Nazis know better than to argue with a Unix guru about which OS is better. If they even try it’s proof that they are anything but a COMPUTER expert.
I will go to OSX when I get a new CPU, probably just after the new year to see if anything new comes out of Macworld.
In the meantime I am using a beige G3 desktop 266mhz (but with a lot of RAM) and I don’t want to upset the apple cart (pun intended) by installing OSX that may not work too well on such a minimum system. Hey, I need my current set-up to work so I can make enough money to buy a G5 or whatever comes next.
I started my computer experience using a mainframe terminal.
Apple II (a step up from the mainframe as far as I am concerned)
Am I stuck at 9.1? I have a Mac clone, a PowerComputing, Powerbase 200MT, with a PowerLogix G3 upgrade in it. Well it looks like I can’t get any further than 9.1 as of now. Gee is this Steve’s way of getting us “Old Mac hardware users” to upgrade and buy new machines if we want to keep up with the OS? I can’t run 10 either. Too bad I can’t even keep up with the latest on system 9… Looks like I am going to have to “settle” for living in the past until I can afford a new G4. Boy, it “only” cost me $2,500 five years ago for my current system, so that means I needed to be putting away $500 a year so that I could keep up ! Oh well…
I don’t like old cars, old furnature, or old operating systems. I have already abandoned the “classic” Mac as much as possible (maybe when Deus Ex 2 comes out for OS X I can stop using OS 9).
It’s not a “fear” of the future, but when I’ll be able to “afford” the future. As much as I would love to have a new Mac every time one comes out, it isn’t going to happen. Just a matter on money priorities. Yes, I will get a new Mac, but not as often as I would like to ...
