With the preference file problem, take a look at Preferential Treatment available at http://www.jonn8.com/html/pt.html. It will check the validity of all your plist files.
Ping is also available using the Network Utilities found in the Utilities Folder.
You could also try pinging the Gmail mail server.

I remember I heard that AAC is apple thing, wikipedia say something else. AAC is standard and used in other places like PS3
