Energizer Introduces Two USB Dual Charge Products

| Quick Look Review

Energizer has introduced the Dual Universal USB Charger for autos and the Dual Universal USB Charger for wall outlets. Both let the user charge two small USB powered devices at the same time.

The new Dual Universal USB Charger plugs into any auto cigarette lighter outlet and offers two USB ports, so that you can recharge two of your USB powered devices at the same time. It works with most devices, meaning it will not recharge an iPad. The charger is three inches long and two inches at the widest point.

The USB Dual Charger For Autos

The new Dual Universal USB Charger for wall outlets plugs into any live wall outlet and also offers two USB ports that allow recharging two USB powered devices at the same time. Like the auto charger, it will not recharge an iPad. The wall charger measures 2 x 2 x 2-in and is white with silver trim.

Both products have a one year limited warranty. The MSRP for each is US$19.99 although I found both at numerous places on-line for around US$10.

Using the products

The auto charger — The charger works well. It is fast, even when charging two products. I went with my iPhone 4 and my iPod Nano, both of which were more than three-quarters down. Both recharged completely while I drove around town for about an hour running errands.

The wall charger — With most household wall outlets this product will cover the second plug space just enough that you can’t use it, but with higher end outlets and power strips that does not occur. The plug folds away when not in use which provides good portability. The recharge time for my second iPod Nano which needed to be completely charged, and a friends iPhone 3G which was sitting at 50 percent, was 40 minutes.

Do I recommend them?

I do. It is extremely convenient to be able to recharge two items at once and the fact that these products are made by Energizer gives me confidence in their durability. Oh, and one more thing, the packages for both are easy to open. No chain saw required.

Does the auto charger have the internal chip that powers down when not in use? Some chargers continue to try and draw a charge from the cigarette lighter and can actually short out the fuses when the car turns on if connected.

In my experience, chargers that aren’t rated with enough power to charge an iPad do, in fact, charge the iPad.  They just charge it really slowly.  As always, YMMV….

These are neat, especially the wall outlet one. I’ve been looking forward to installing a few of those decorative outlets that include 2 USB ports, but these may be better for applications where something protruding out of the outlet isn’t terribly unsightly.

What would really be cool would be a 6-outlet plug with a couple USB ports.

Many thanks for the heads up, Nancy. These are truly useful.

For those of us who work/play outside of the USA, it would be helpful to know (I assume this is the case these days), if these are trans-current compatible (100 - 240V outlets). I checked the website and could find nothing on this.

I don’t know the answer to that.  There is nothing on the package and nothing on the web site, which makes me think that it is not a feature.
